Broadcom's end-to-end solution helps home networking development

As the demand for video viewing and distribution within the home continues to increase, the quality requirements for home networks are increasing. There are several main ways of home networking, Wi-Fi, HomePlug, MoCA, and Ethernet. However, single interconnect technology cannot achieve 100% coverage regardless of region, family, or room. Therefore, establishing a hybrid network in the home that seamlessly connects all devices is a problem that many operators and device manufacturers are aware of.

The IEEE P1905.1 standard provides the underlying mechanism for unifying multiple interconnect technologies that make up a home network. P1905.1 defines a common data and control service access point for a hybrid network based on Wi-Fi, HomePlug, MoCA and Ethernet. Regardless of which protocol and medium is used, data can be sent and received through this access point. P1905.1 introduces a software layer between Layer 2 and Layer 3, which abstracts detailed operational information for each link being used and aggregates data sent and received over different links. Seamless connectivity of various interconnect technologies is implemented in the home network. Advanced software management is also possible through this software layer. For example, when a user device is connected to a link that supports different technologies, it is no longer necessary to enter a different password, just a simple push of a button. P1905.1 also specifies a unified Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee mechanism that enables device discovery and configuration, establishes secure connections, and provides other advanced network management functions. The P1905.1 offers many key features and has many advantages for implementing next-generation home networks.

Among the many home networking standards, most Chinese households still use wireless methods, while in Europe and North America, more power lines (PLCs) are used, because IPTV is more mature than China in these countries. Broadcom believes that there will be such an evolutionary process in China. Broadcom believes that HomePlug AV2 products and wireless technologies can be integrated and complemented to build a backbone network with high bandwidth, high quality and stable transmission within the home.

For example, the broadband entrance set by the operator for the home is usually at a fixed location in the house, in the corner of the living room, or in the corner of the study, but the TV IPTV box is likely to be placed in the bedroom, so most The time between the two boxes is no way to put them together. In this case, wireless is a good solution, but in many complicated situations, such as too far distance, wall blocking, wireless may be disturbed. And the home wire socket is definitely ubiquitous, so we can use the home wire as a network cable to solve the problem of redeploying the network cable.

In order to meet the growing bandwidth requirements of the home network, HomePlug's standards have been evolving, and the latest is the HomePlug AV2 standard announced in 2013. Compared to HomePlug AV, HomePlug AV2 has many new features that dramatically increase throughput and network coverage. New PHY capabilities include MIMO, wider frequency bands, and more efficient wireless signal propagation. HomePlug AV2 MIMO technology takes advantage of the third line on the home power outlet, or ground, to use it with another line or neutral to support the transmission of a second independent signal for improved signal transmission. The HomePlug AV2 has two transmitters and two receivers that improve the signal transmission performance of a single-pair (SISO) PLC (up to double). MIMO performance is greatly improved by using beamforming techniques on poorly performing channels. In the absence of a ground wire, the default mode of the device is SISO. HomePlug AV2 also extends the band from 1.8 - 30 MHz to 1.8 - 86 MHz for HomePlug AV, introducing new MAC layer features, including power-saving modes that can greatly increase efficiency. By implementing a number of new technologies, HomePlug AV2 can provide a 2 Gbps PHY transfer rate when using MIMO technology and a 1 Gbps transfer rate when using SISO technology.

In 2013, Broadcom introduced the industry's first HomePlug AV2 chip product, the single-issue BCM60333 and the dual-issue BCM60500. These chips are compatible with all the HomePlug AV products on the market. They also support the upcoming launch of the HomePlug Alliance. The IEEE 1905.1 standard nVoy certification to provide an intelligent, multi-mode home network that facilitates the use of a PLC-Wi-Fi hybrid network and improves the quality and coverage of connectivity between broadband gateways and set-top boxes. At the same time, the chip supports a one-button simple connection function, as well as the authentication function of the PLC-Wi-Fi extended network, and also meets all power regulatory requirements, including EuP Lot 6 and CENELEC 50561-1 standards.

As the main market for HomePlug technology, 80% of the products are currently sold in Europe, and new products are more popular there. Broadcom's HomePlug AV2 1G and MIMO 2G products will be available for the Chinese market. It is expected that 1G power line (PLC) products using Broadcom chips, including 1G products equipped with wireless technology, will be available soon.

Due to the relatively complete infrastructure of the big cities, more bandwidth can be obtained. At the same time, from the perspective of operators, new applications and new services will be more accepted in first- and second-tier cities. Therefore, we predict that the outbreak of demand for power line (PLC) products will start from these cities. However, from a technical point of view, because the power line (PLC) is very popular, it is more convenient to implement the deployment, whether it is a first- or second-tier or a third- or fourth-line city.

Considering the high concentration of China's residence, we have adopted a new neighbor network interference technology. With the support of this technology, we can reduce interference and realize the network experience of a single-family home. Broadcom has already cooperated with large equipment manufacturers in China. Have such a live test. At the same time, the effect of coordination between neighbors' network interferences from different manufacturers is also good, and should be added to the HomePlug AV2 standard soon.

Broadcom is a complete chip provider of end-to-end solutions with a complete solution from set-top boxes to access gateways to wireless routers and even HomePlug AV2 power lines (PLCs). More importantly, Broadcom products support products that are standardized, so as long as the products meet these standards and can be interconnected, these technologies and products will ultimately provide better home networking solutions for Chinese users.
