IBM Watson Shows Its AI Muscle at US Open

This year's U.S. Tennis Open made the American audience excited because the U.S. domestic women's singles players swept the women's singles semifinals. This was the first time in 36 years that American U.S. women wrapped up women's singles semifinals. Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens will compete for the final championship and a record $3.7 million in prize money. Men's singles, Spain's star Nadal will attack the individual 16 Grand Slams. If it weren’t for ESPN’s insertion of IBM’s advertisements this year, viewers may not know that IBM is also involved. It is reported that IBM played an important role in the 2017 US Open, allowing fans to see several key elements of the game on television and social media sites. It has been 25 years since IBM became the official USTA technical partner, but the company has used Watson technology for the first time in this competition and has increased the fan experience. This new technology is called IBM Watson Media. This new technology uses artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as a combination of on-site and cloud-based computing to automatically generate compelling high-definition video. One of the new features called "Cognitive Highlight" has been added to the list of tasks that have been "delegated" to Watson; including collecting and analyzing statistical information to provide information to television stations, actively monitoring the US Tennis Open's official website to prevent security threats, and expanding Scale to adapt to the dramatic increase in network traffic before and after the game. Noah Syken, vice president of IBM's sports and entertainment partners, said: “There are so many activities on many venues in the US Open, and even the fastest video team is still facing challenges. In response to this challenge, Watson is now working with USTA. Watch the game to help fans catch the best shots in time. We see this kind of technology taking the lead in tennis tournaments, but the entire IBM Watson media portfolio has the potential to affect many industries." The Cognitive Highlight feature of IBM Watson Media is the use of artificial intelligence to analyze players and viewers in real time. During the competition, the system has been monitoring seven different U.S. Open tennis venues, analyzing the speed of the ball, the distance the players are running, and the number of cheerings of the audience, etc., in order to assign it to the “Overall Excitement” score. All of this data is processed by Watson and will then appear on the U.S. Tennis Open App and the USTA Facebook page.
