National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering Progress Realizes 5 Breakthroughs


The eleventh and 863 major projects of semiconductor lighting represent the highest level of domestic R&D. Since the implementation of the project, China's LED epitaxial materials, chip manufacturing, device packaging, phosphors and other aspects have shown unit technology with independent technology property rights, and some core technologies. It has originality and has formed a relatively complete R&D and industrial system from upstream materials, midstream chip preparation, downstream device packaging and integrated applications. It has laid a foundation for the LED industry in China to a certain extent.

The implementation of the National Semiconductor Lighting Project has played an important role in promoting the development of China's semiconductor lighting industry.

As of the end of 2008, the major progress made in the national semiconductor lighting project is as follows:

1. Exploratory, cutting-edge material growth and device research have some original technologies.

Domestically, 280 nm UV LED devices have been developed, and the output power of 20 mA has reached the order of milliwatts, which is at the international advanced level;

The epitaxial growth of non-polar gallium nitride, X-ray diffraction half-width decreased from 780 arc seconds to 559 arc seconds, which is one of the best results reported internationally;

For the first time, large-area nano- and thin-film photonic crystal LEDs are realized. The output power of a 20mA room-continuously driven small chip is increased from 4.3mW to 8mW.

The phosphorescent efficiency of the fully phosphorescent laminated white OLED has reached 45 lm/W; the 6-piece and 7-piece MOCVD prototypes have been successfully developed and process validation is underway.

2. Major breakthroughs in key technologies for industrialization.

The proportion of domestic chip replacement imports has increased year by year, and has been close to 50% so far.

The power type white LED package is close to the international advanced level and has become an important LED packaging base in the world. The company's 100 lumens/watt LED manufacturing technology is progressing rapidly. Through the graphic substrate technology and the improved epitaxial layer structure, the power chip package completed on the industrialized line reaches 75 lm/W.

The efficiency of the power-type silicon substrate LED chip with independent intellectual property rights is close to 60 lm/W, which is at the international advanced level.

3. The research and major applications of large-scale system integration technology are progressing smoothly.

The product range and scale of application products are at the forefront of the world, and it has become the largest producer and exporter of LED full-color display, solar LED, landscape lighting and other application products. Tianjin FAW Xiali and Changzhou Xingyu have developed LED car headlights. In July 2008, Hisense’s first 42-inch ultra-thin LED-backlit LCD TV was launched. It has sold nearly 10,000 units, indicating 40% of world production. Chinese consumer electronics began to use LED technology on a large scale.

The implementation of large-scale system integration technology represented by the Olympic demonstration project has promoted product integration innovation and demonstration applications, showing the effects of energy conservation and environmental protection, and raising the awareness of the international community. In August of this year, the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games and the LED landscape lighting and full-color display screens used by the venues set a precedent for the large-scale use of LED lighting technology in the history of the Olympic Games. LED has become an important force supporting the Green Olympics and the Olympic Games. According to estimates, only 50,000 square meters of LED landscape lighting in water cubes can save 745,000 kWh and save more than 70% of energy throughout the year. Power LEDs (up to 80-90 lumens/watt with foreign chip packages) have begun to be used in lighting applications such as secondary road lights and parking lot gas stations, saving 30-50% of electricity, and purchasing and operating comprehensive costs for about 3 years. About 50,000 LED street lamps have been demonstrated in more than 20 cities, and it has become possible to use LED for energy-saving renovation of municipal lighting.

LED emergency lighting fixtures play an important role in earthquake relief work. Under the unified deployment of the Ministry of Science and Technology, some of the 863 project undertakers of the Alliance Organization urgently provided about 30,000 sets of LED hand-cranked lights, LED miner's lamps, reading lights, and flashlights to the Wenchuan earthquake-stricken area in the first time. Under the circumstances, this batch of LED lamps played a very important role in emergency lighting and treatment for the wounded in the disaster area.

4, 130lm / W semiconductor white light lighting integration technology research led to the construction of public platform conditions.

The graphic substrate and related epitaxial technology independently developed by the Semiconductor Lighting R&D Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences were successfully transferred to the enterprise, and breakthroughs in some key technologies were realized. A flexible process line using industrialized equipment to develop industrial technology was initially established.

5. The National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering R&D and Industry Alliance established an industry-university-research cooperation platform by establishing industrial R&D funds, organizing major Olympic demonstration workers, holding innovation competitions, and establishing patent pools, which improved the efficiency and level of technological innovation and promoted Implementation of major projects.

Significant achievements have been made in the promotion of standard coordination, and 12 national standards and 7 industry standards are being approved. In particular, members of the organization spontaneously raised funds to deal with US 337 investigation patent litigation. The alliance also actively uses the two cities to taste two kinds of resources and promote international cooperation. It has successfully organized the 5th International Forum and Exhibition of Semiconductor Lighting, with a total of 3,000 participants. Participate in the American Solid State Lighting Systems and Technology Alliance (ASSIST), and participate in international conferences as an opportunity to coordinate and promote international standardization.

Through the implementation of major projects in semiconductor lighting engineering, it is expected that in 2010, China is expected to break through the core technologies of materials and devices, so that the luminous efficiency of white light reaches 130lm/W, the industrialization level reaches 100lm/W, and more than 200 invention patents are applied to further reduce costs. In the main links of the industry chain, 2-3 leading brand enterprises will be formed, and the application will begin to enter the general lighting field. The scale of related industries will reach 100 billion yuan, and the annual energy saving will be 50 billion kWh, eventually forming independent intellectual property rights and international competitiveness.
