Sony announced more details of the new OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF)

Recently, Sony (Japan) official website announced more details of its new OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF). The EVF was first used on the external viewfinders of the NEX-7, SLT-A77, SLT-A65 and NEX-5N. The OLED uses a combination of white OLED and color filters to change the traditional design of red, green and blue OLEDs. Since adjusting color filters is easier than changing OLED tubes, the new EVFs achieve higher color accuracy.

This 2.4 megapixel (XGA) product is an ultra-portable high-resolution color organic EL display panel (OLED). Using Sony's unique semiconductor and OLED technology, the panel features high contrast, wide color gamut and fast response. It has been used on the electronic viewfinder of the interchangeable lens digital camera released by Sony on August 24. The new viewfinder achieves the highest resolution and smallest pixel size in the industry.

The traditional OLED panel uses a three-color LED tube with a pixel width of about 200um. Sony's newly developed panel separates the white LED from the color filter. The pixel size reaches the industry's smallest 3.3×9.9um and the total resolution reaches 2.4 million effective pixels.

In general, a reduction in pixel size increases the difficulty of obtaining accurate color information. Sony solves this problem with its unique semiconductor technology and OLED panel technology, making ultra-compact high-resolution panels possible. It also delivers high contrast, wide color gamut and fast pixels.
