IHS iSuppli: The new version of the iPad is disassembled at a cost of about $316.

Apple's new iPad was launched this Friday, and several organizations have dismantled this new product. iSuppli has previously disassembled and analyzed other Apple products and has a high degree of credibility. On Friday, an analyst at market research firm IHS iSuppli bought a new iPad at an Apple retail store in southern California and sent it to the lab for dismantling. iSuppli estimates that the component cost of the new version of the entry-level iPad is about $316.

iSuppli found that the component suppliers of the new iPad did not change much compared to the iPad 2. The company's analyst, Andrew Rassweiler, said: "The logo on the component is basically the same as we saw when we last dismantled it."

The new iPad uses chips from Qualcomm and Broadcom. Among them, Qualcomm provides a baseband processing chip, and Broadcom provides Bluetooth and WiFi chips. In addition, TriQuint Semiconductor offers other wireless components, STMicroelectronics offers gyroscopes, and Cirrus Logic offers audio codecs.

iSuppli estimates that the $499 new 16GB WiFi version of the new iPad component costs about $316, which is equivalent to 63% of the retail price. The $829 64GB WiFi+4G version of the new iPad component costs about $409, which is equivalent to 49% of the retail price. Compared to the corresponding version of the iPad 2, the cost of the new iPad components of these two versions increased by 21% and 25% respectively.

The new iPad uses a higher-priced Samsung display. Lassler estimates that the cost of the display is $87, which is higher than the $57 for the iPad 2. He also said that the other two panel suppliers LG Display and Sharp have signed a supply agreement with Apple, but only Samsung has started full production. Display costs can be as high as $90, depending on the manufacturer.

In addition, the touch elements used in the new iPad are basically the same as the iPad 2. Lassler said that three Taiwanese manufacturers, including Yuhong Group, Shenghua Technology and Chi Mei Electronics, provided related components. However, he expects that Apple will make great adjustments to the future iPad touch interface.

iSuppli estimates that the cost of the front and rear cameras of the new iPad is $12.35, which is three times the cost of the iPad 2 camera, which is consistent with the iPhone 4. It is difficult to identify the camera supplier by dismantling, because Apple is well hidden. Possible suppliers include Taiwan Dali Optoelectronics and Omnivision. Previously, a research company called Chipworks found that the CMOS sensor used in the iPhone 4S came from Sony.

In the new iPad, the processor is Apple's latest A5X, while the foundry is Samsung. The cost of this processor is estimated to be about $23, which is higher than the $14 for the iPad 2 processor. The battery performance of the new iPad has been greatly improved, so the cost of related components has also increased. The new iPad's battery cost is about $32, which is higher than the iPad 2's $25, but the battery capacity has increased by more than 70%. In addition, the decline in the price of lithium-ion polymer materials still benefits Apple.

In addition to iSuppli, the technology website iFixit also dismantled the new iPad this week.

Flex-Rigid PCB

Flex-rigid PCBs are printed circuit boards highlighted by both rigid and flexible areas that make them ideally suited for a wide range of applications. The typical rigid-flex PCB circuit includes two or more conductive layers that comprise either flexible or rigid insulation material between each one - the outer layers may have either exposed pads or covers. Conductors are found on the rigid layers, while plated through-holes are found in both the rigid and flexible layers.
The Advantages of Flex-Rigid PCB Technology
While this type of flexible circuit may be more expensive to design and produce, it does offer a number of important advantages. For instance, the reduced size makes it easier to fit more components into a smaller space. This can actually help to lower overall system costs. Additionally, because they require the need for fewer interconnects and related parts and components, these flexible circuit board can also prove to be more reliable and require less maintenance in the long run.

As with all types of flexible circuit boards, the flex-rigid PCB will perform well in even the harshest environments, especially those featuring extreme heat. A rigid flex board is also easy to test, making it well-suited for prototyping.
