Look at the dialogue between Bill Gates and HoloLens

Although sometimes their reputation is not stable and occasionally there are moral compromises, technical pioneers are important and will not let others tell you about other things. The right enthusiasm behind the right technology platform or hardware can sometimes mean cultivating a potential user community and watching the difference in product abortion.

This brings up our topic today: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and the company's flagship AR product HoloLens.

Although Gates retired from Microsoft's day-to-day work many years ago (he continued to serve as the company's technical consultant) is true, his voice about the future and how we use software and hardware to realize our potential is still strong. So, considering his role as a technology pioneer and his continued passion for innovation, such as his frequent postings on his blog and social media, you would consider him one of the main advocates of Microsoft HoloLens.

However, just look at his public appearances and comments over the past few years and you will find that it is not, it is not the case, and it is far worse. In fact, in any public comment by Gates, it is hard to find a mention of HoloLens.

Of course, Gates' retirement life has been productive and spent most of his time on charity and travel. However, when I saw that Microsoft was so strong behind HoloLens, then suddenly realized that the high-profile voice of Satya Nadella, the company’s CEO, seemed to be almost completely ignored. The device, this looks extremely strange. At the same time, more and more passionate developers quietly develop applications and tools behind the scenes, eventually pushing the HoloLens version of augmented reality to the mainstream.

"Hololens is amazing, Microsoft has invested a lot in chips and software. This is the beginning of virtual reality." - Bill Gates

Last month, when he was a guest editor of Time Magazine, Gates’s statement on HoloLens first appeared in my mind. This issue is a special issue of promoting augmented reality components on LifeVR apps for iOS and Android platforms. Specifically, the site asks readers to "check these and other AR features of the magazine at home and download the LIFEVR app for iOS and Android." However, in the efforts to promote this issue of Gates, there is no explicit mention of any HoloLens version of the LifeVR application (there is a virtual reality headset application that is a Windows Mixed Reality version, but this is not HoloLens).

Ok, maybe this is just a magazine's move to prioritize or prefer a smartphone app. But then I looked at Gates' very active Twitter and personal website and found that I couldn't find any mention of HoloLens in these places.

Some might think that maybe he is only not interested in immersive calculations. But it is wrong. In fact, Gates seems to be completely addicted to virtual reality. He even worked with Samsung VR to develop a regular VR video series (if you need help getting started, there is a special VR settings page on his personal website). Not only can you find Gates happy to wear the Samsung GearVR headline on his tweet, but he can also see him wearing the HTCVive headline on his YouTube page (see video below).

After searching multiple times in other places on the Internet, I couldn't find any photos of him wearing HoloLens. Of course, one (or more) photos of Microsoft devices on his body can be found on the Ethernet, but finding them is not easy.

So now we know that Gates likes virtual reality, and I don't particularly mention HoloLens. no problem. But when did he mention HoloLens? What does he think of the device?

This made me have to go back a few years ago to find the answer to this question through the RedditAMA conference held in January 2015, when it was almost the time of the first generation of HoloLens.

A Reddit user asked: "What do you think about the new Hololens? Have you tried it?"

Gates' answer is: "Hololens is quite amazing. Microsoft has invested a lot in chips and software. This is the beginning of virtual reality. It is very difficult to make the device not dizzy or disgusting - This must be super, super fast, and it takes years to build a software application to achieve this goal."

Is this the beginning of virtual reality?

Of course, with regard to the future of immersive computing, you can interpret these statements with forgiveness, thinking that they mean a lot of different things, but the key here is that when he was asked about the augmented reality device HoloLens What he said. Yes, for HoloLens, it is still in its early stages, and perhaps his view of the device has not yet taken shape. However, he basically changed the topic.

Then, at the 2016 ASU+GSV Annual Summit, he was asked, “Do you think that the acceptance of new technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality will accelerate the application of personalized learning?” Gates replied: “Yes I think virtual reality can make things more attractive, and in some things, you will have more feelings - even if you can't build a car in the virtual world, you can still sit there These pieces are assembled together, and this makes you feel that it is impossible to do this in the real world."

There is no mention of VR. There is no mention of HoloLens.

Even after a year of release of HoloLens, Gates responded to questions about HoloLens with answers to VR.

Yes, maybe Gates has five HoloLens devices in his home, which he uses every day. Maybe he has a team now doing "gates notes" about the HoloLens app. To be fair, he has built Microsoft into a giant. On this planet, he is not really guilty of the precious time of Microsoft or its users.

However, when a person who is so indispensable with Microsoft's history and success publicly expresses his enthusiasm and participation in VR, there is almost nothing to say about HoloLens, which makes people really want to know: Gates Do you trust Microsoft's HoloLens?

They said that if you don't have anything to say, don't say anything. In this case, Gates' silence on HoloLens became deafening.
