ProLogis, the world's largest distribution equipment owner, manager and developer, announced on the 19th that it will install its first photovoltaic (PV) system in Japan.
ProLogis will install a one megawatt (MW) photovoltaic system at ProLogis Parc Zama I. ProLogis Parc Zama I is a five-story distribution facility with a total area of ​​1.2 million square feet (113,000 square meters). The park is located in Zama City and is the logistics center of Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan. The PV system is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2009.
ProLogis Chief Sustainability Officer Robert Watson said: We are very excited to announce the installation of the first photovoltaic system in Japan, which will lay the foundation for the future installation of the same project in Japan. The company is committed to implementing a sufficient renewable energy system, with the aim of 2010. Before the year, the annual power production capacity reached more than 25 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), and the project must help us achieve this goal.
Once put into operation, the PV system is expected to generate approximately 1 million kilowatt-hours per year, enough to power all of the lighting in public and storage areas and half of the air conditioning in the office area.
To support the installation of the project, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, has given a subsidy to offset some of the expenses of the project. The grant is one of the many actions recently taken by the Japanese government to support the increased use of renewable energy in Japan. Currently, ProLogis has completed or is in the development stage of a total of about 6.1 megawatts of photovoltaic projects. To date, the company has signed two more than 800,000 square feet of rooftop leases in the United States to power two separate installations, Southern California Edison, located in Fontana, California. The 2.4 MW installation project and the 1.1 MW installation at Portland General Electric, Portland, Oregon. ProLogis has solar installations in France, Spain and Germany. In addition, the company has completed three wind turbine installation projects with a total power of 68 kilowatts (kW) in Japan.
ProLogis has a total of 37.1 million square feet (3,500 square meters) of industrial space combined, managed or under development in Japan. ProLogis' main customers in Japan include: DHL, Nippon Express, Panasonic Logistics, Askul, Sanyo Electric Logistics, Seiyu/Wal-Mart (Yiyou/Wal-Mart), Yamato Logistics (Japan Daiwa Logistics Co., Ltd.), FedEx (FedEx) and Nikon (Nikon).
