The Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced today that the nation’s largest scientific device, the world's first superconducting Tokamak (East) Super Ring Express, has achieved a stable 101.2 second steady-state long pulse high confinement plasma. This signifies that EAST has become the first Tokamak nuclear fusion experiment device in the world to achieve steady-state high-constrained mode operation lasting hundreds of seconds.
This milestone breakthrough shows that the study of magnetic confinement fusion in China will continue to lead the international frontier in the physical and engineering aspects of steady-state operation. It will be used for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the future China Fusion Engineering Experimental Reactor (CFETR). The construction and operation are of great scientific significance, and at the same time it has laid an important technical foundation for the development and utilization of nuclear fusion clean energy by humans.
EAST is 11 meters high, 8 meters in diameter and weighs 400 tons. It is the fourth-generation nuclear fusion experimental device in China. Its scientific goal is to make nuclear and fusion of large quantities of helium and neon in seawater under high temperature conditions like the sun. Humans provide a steady stream of clean energy, so it is also called "artificial sun."
After years of research, the Chinese scientific research team has successfully overcome a number of international common problems. For the first time in the world, it has achieved a high constrained operation of 10 million seconds of continuous discharge of 50 million degrees of plasma, achieving a leap from 60 seconds to hundreds of seconds.
The ITER project is currently the largest international science and technology cooperation project in the world and is an important way for humankind to explore the future of high-efficiency and clean energy.
