Despite the growth in online streaming media services, watching linear TVs is still the preferred method of consumer video entertainment for 75% of the population in China.
This is the result of an online consulting company report "Digital China Life."
The report found that the subscription of major online video service VIP members has continued unabated, and most subscribers accept at least two services at the same time. The main reason for receiving services is no advertising, and content scope and exclusivity are a motivation for ordering more than one digital video service.
David Sidebottom, general analyst at Network Consulting, said that because there are no obvious primary viewing devices, the devices used to watch online video services are decentralized. Smart phones, smart TVs, and direct viewing on PCs/laptops are especially used by online video viewers.
In addition to the basic channels, one-third of subscribers also subscribe to additional pay-TV channels. Sports and movies are the most popular in China. However, unsubscription is common and 27% of full-pay TV subscribers have said that they have cancelled their services in the past year.
Sidebottom added: “Watching movies is a major motivating factor for Chinese consumers in addition to basic TV channels. This is different from Western countries. The main reason why Western countries continue to accept pay TV services is related to ease of use.â€
Comedy is a category that respondents particularly like. China’s comedy movies and TV shows rank among the top three most popular types. However, the popularity of international movies has increased, with more than half of respondents saying they watched US/international content at least once a week.
