It has been reported that although cerebral edema can not be cured, it can be treated. In the 1950s, drainage tubes were implanted in patients with cerebral edema, and excessive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles was drained to the abdomen to reabsorb the body. However, the drainage tube lacks sensing function and cannot detect problems such as drainage obstruction. Usually, it is necessary to wait until the patient feels severe pain before going to the doctor.
University of Southern California (USC) Viterbi School of Engineering biomedical researchers Ellis Meng and Tuan Hoang decided to add sensory capabilities to the cerebrospinal fluid drainage tube. The study began in 2013 and eventually established a new startup, Senseer. It specializes in patented micro-sensing technology and introduces the world's first multi-sensor intelligent drainage system.
The research team often collaborates with doctors to meet clinical needs. PhD student Alex Baldwin is now the Senseer technical director.
