Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC3230, an integrated white LED driver with two LDO regulators for driving primary and secondary LED displays and providing low voltage system power rails in portable electronics. Available in a compact 3mm x 3mm QFN package.
The LTC3230 drives up to five 25mA LED current sources, provides 125mA total output current, integrates two 200mA LDOs, has separate enable pins, and pin selectable output voltages as low as 1.2V and 1.8V, respectively. The LTC3230's 2.7V to 5.5V input voltage range has been optimized for single cell Li-Ion/Polymer applications. When driven with a lithium-ion battery (nominally 3.6V), the efficiency is 91% and the quiescent current is only 400uA, maximizing battery life.
The LTC3230 requires only six small capacitors and one resistor to form a slim, flat package with a footprint of <9mm2 and a height of 0.75mm.
The LTC3230's 900kHz, high efficiency multimode 1x/1.5x/2x charge pump operates at a low noise constant frequency and automatically optimizes efficiency based on VIN and LED forward voltage conditions. The device powers up in 1x mode and automatically switches to boost mode (1.5x) when either of the enabled LED current sources approaches the voltage drop state. Subsequent voltage drops will switch the device to 2x mode. The maximum current of the primary/secondary display is set with a single resistor. The LED current is controlled by a precise internal current source, and the brightness, dimming and ON/OFF control of all displays is achieved via a simple single-wire interface.
The LTC3230 has 32 brightness levels for the primary and secondary displays. Internal circuitry prevents inrush current and excessive input noise during startup and mode switching.
