Micronas dual output Hall sensor combined with multi-dimensional measurement and redundancy

Photocoupler

Micronas has recently expanded its direct angle sensor series, the HAL37xy, by introducing the dual-output version, HAR37xy. This new sensor integrates two fully automotive-compliant, high-precision outputs for direct angle and linear position measurement in a compact SOIC8 package. It is designed to meet the rigorous demands of both automotive and industrial applications, offering reliable performance in extreme environments.

The HAR37xy is ideal for applications requiring precise angle or linear position sensing, such as clutch position detection in transmissions, body height modules, engine gas management (like EGR systems), throttle positioning, and turbocharger actuators. It operates reliably in ambient temperatures ranging from –40°C to 170°C, making it suitable for even the most challenging conditions.

Each HAR37xy features two Hall elements that are mechanically and electronically independent, with an electrical contact compensation design known as "stacking." These outputs are positioned at opposite ends of the package to prevent short circuits. This stack design ensures that both Hall elements detect nearly identical magnetic fields, resulting in synchronized output signals for improved accuracy and reliability.

The redundancy built into the small SOIC8 package not only helps reduce system costs but also enhances overall stability by minimizing PCB size and solder joints. Customers have the flexibility to choose between single or dual-channel configurations during assembly. Both the dual-output HAR37xy and the single-source HAL37xy share the same SOIC8 form factor, allowing for easy upgrades without major redesigns. This compatibility enables faster time-to-market and seamless integration with existing magnetic circuits and modules.

A standout feature of the HAR37xy is its unique "virtual compensation" technology, which allows for the use of smaller magnets without compromising performance. This innovation enables the measurement of linear displacement up to 40 mm using magnets as long as 10 mm, reducing magnet size by approximately 30%. This not only cuts costs but also simplifies system design.

The HAR37xy excels in angular measurement thanks to its advanced pixel chip architecture, which includes one horizontal (BZ) slice and two vertical (BX, BY) slices. This configuration enables accurate detection of the magnetic field in both horizontal and vertical directions, ensuring precise and stable performance even under varying conditions.

To support developers, Micronas offers free samples of the HAR37xy, along with user-friendly LabViewâ„¢ software and comprehensive application notes. These resources make it easier for both experienced engineers and newcomers to accelerate their development process. The product is scheduled for mass production starting in early 2016, marking a significant step forward in precision sensing technology.
