Apple MFi adds USB-C port and Lightning to 3.5mm patch cord

Apple has recently expanded its MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) licensing program to include support for USB-C ports and Lightning-to-3.5mm audio cables. This update marks a significant shift in Apple's approach to accessory compatibility, allowing manufacturers to design charging accessories that integrate USB-C technology while still maintaining MFi certification. With the new specifications, developers can now build charging solutions for iOS and Mac devices that feature USB-C ports. These accessories will be compatible with the USB-C cables that come bundled with the latest Mac models. This change is expected to streamline the charging experience for users who own both Apple and non-Apple devices that use USB-C. Interestingly, the updated standard doesn’t allow USB-C ports to support “passthrough charging,” which is commonly used in Lightning-based accessories. That means you won’t be able to charge your device while it’s also powering another connected device via USB-C. Additionally, syncing iOS devices through USB-C isn’t supported under the new rules. However, Apple’s documentation does confirm that USB-C ports can be used to charge external accessories like speakers and power banks. On the other hand, the Lightning-to-3.5mm audio cable is designed to let users connect traditional 3.5mm headphones or audio equipment directly to their iOS devices without needing an adapter. This simplifies the setup for those who prefer wired audio solutions. Apple has also made changes to the MFi logo itself, updating it to include support for the San Francisco font. The new design replaces specific device icons with more generic Apple logos, making the branding more consistent across all certified products. This update reflects Apple’s ongoing efforts to modernize its accessory ecosystem while maintaining strict control over user experience and hardware compatibility. It’s a move that could encourage more innovation from third-party manufacturers while ensuring quality and safety for end users.
