According to recent reports from foreign media, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has once again adjusted his timeline for the development of fully autonomous driving technology. In a recent Q&A session, he mentioned that driverless capabilities are expected to become widely available across all aspects of driving within the next 18 months. This statement has generated significant interest among Tesla owners who have already invested in the Autopilot 2.0 and 2.5 systems, as these models were designed with the potential for full autonomy through future software updates.
Musk had previously set a two-year target for achieving full self-driving, but he now believes that autopilot technology will cover all driving scenarios by the end of next year. While he didn’t explicitly mention Tesla, he has consistently emphasized that the company aims to be the first to offer a safer alternative to human drivers. He has claimed that Autopilot 2.0 is already 2-3 times safer than human-driven vehicles.
When Tesla first introduced Autopilot in 2015, Musk suggested that full autonomy would be achievable in just two years. However, over time, he has shifted the timeline, stating that the goal is to reach Level 5 autonomy—the highest level of automation—where a driver can completely relax during the journey. Despite these shifting deadlines, Musk remains optimistic about the near-term progress of the technology.
Currently, Tesla vehicles come equipped with "full self-driving" hardware, but the feature is not yet activated. The company has stated that it will enable this function only after proving it is safer than human drivers and when legal regulations allow.
Earlier this year, Tesla had planned a cross-country test drive without a driver, but Musk recently clarified that while the company is capable of such a feat, it chose to use custom coding rather than rely on a Level 4 or 5 automated system. He also mentioned that the real “fully automatic driving†will be unveiled in the next three to six months, with new features based on this technology soon following.
This isn’t the first time Musk has pushed back timelines. When Tesla launched Autopilot 2.0 in late 2016, he promised that its features would be available in 2017. However, he later admitted that the development process was more complex than anticipated, leading to delays.
