The above forecast shows that sales of semiconductor equipment are expected to decline by 20% in 2008, following a 6% increase in sales of semiconductor equipment in 2007. However, SEMI expects semiconductor equipment sales to increase by 6% and 13% in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI, said that semiconductor equipment spending began to decline in the second half of 2007 due to the decline in memory sector spending and poor equipment pricing. However, sales of semiconductor equipment are expected to recover steadily in 2009, and sales of semiconductor equipment will continue to grow after 2009.
SEMI expects semiconductor processing equipment sales to decline 21% to $25.4 billion in 2008, and expects semiconductor integration and packaging equipment sales to decline 14% to $2.44 billion in 2008, and semiconductor test equipment sales in 2008 fell 20% to $4.04 billion.
SEMI expects that, except for China, sales of semiconductor equipment will decline in the rest of 2008. It is expected that sales of semiconductor equipment in China will increase by 1% in 2008 compared with 2007.
SEMI also said that the top four sales in the global semiconductor equipment market in 2008 are expected to be: Japan, Taiwan, Korea and North America.
