Anchorage invests $2.2 million to build an LED city

Cree and the City of Anchorage, Alaska, announced that Anchorage has joined CreeLED City, an international energy conservation program. The mayor of Anchorage said that the city government has taken the initiative to invest 2.2 million US dollars to buy LED lamps to replace 16,000 street lamps in the city, accounting for about 1/4 of the total number of street lights in Anchorage to achieve energy-saving purposes. .

The Mayor of Anchorage also said that in the past few months, executives have been learning about this new type of lighting technology, which is very energy efficient and saves on maintenance costs. In addition, the government also held a lighting conference and public survey activities in March this year. The results showed that the majority of the public favored the new white LED lighting products. The current feedback and cost-saving surveys have made the city government confident in the implementation of the LED street lighting plan.

CreeLED City Project Manager pointed out that lighting is very important for the daily life of Anchorage, where there are about 85 days in a year and less than 8 hours. This is determined by the location of the city of Anchorage, which is very long during the day and very short in winter. Moreover, the city of Anchorage is often cloudy in winter, which reduces the amount of sunlight available locally. Therefore, the city of Anchorage needs to be at the forefront of energy-efficient lighting.

The city of Anchorage will purchase BetaLED luminaires, which are 50% more energy efficient than current street lights, which will save the city $360,000 per year at current energy prices. This LED fixture is part of CreeXLampLED and has a life expectancy of 7 times that of a high pressure sodium lamp, saving maintenance costs.

Anchorage is the seventh city to join the CreeLEDcity program. The top six are Raleigh, North Carolina, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Ann Arbor, Mississippi, USA, Osting, Texas, USA Tianjin and Toraca, Italy.
