The 5G era will have higher and higher requirements for the mobility of semiconductors and the adaptability to the Internet of Things era. At this time, the advantages of FD-SOI and RF-SOI technology are becoming more and more prominent, and people's attention to SOI technology is also increasing.
On September 26th, the 5th Shanghai FD-SOI Forum was successfully held. Geki CEO Sanjay Jha came to the site to give a speech entitled "Winning with SOI", explaining how Gexin used the FDX® platform to advance the development of SOI technology and introduced the company's latest technology. The results also summarize the current state of SOI technology and imagine the future of the industry.
Regarding FD-SOI technology, the current general question in the industry is whether there is enough market, whether it can build an ecosystem, the characteristics of technology itself, and the market growth point in the 5G era. Sanjay’s speech answered these questions one by one and strengthened the industry’s confidence in FD-SOI technology.
The Chinese market has great potential for FD-SOI technology, and Gexin attaches great importance to it. Of the 35 customers currently working on 22FDX® with Gexin, 10 are from China. In February 2017, the grid 12-inch wafer fab was officially opened in Chengdu. In September, the fab just held a ceremony. The fab's construction speed and future production are amazing and will be completed in the first half of next year. In May 2017, Gexin and Chengdu officially signed the “FD-SOI Industry Eco-sphere Action Planâ€. Gexin will cooperate with Chengdu and establish a number of centers dedicated to IP development and integrated circuit design in Chengdu. And incubating local fabless companies in Chengdu to help them hire more than 500 engineers to support semiconductor and systems companies developing 22FD-based products for the mobile, connected, 5G, IoT and automotive markets.
Regarding the industries that need FD-SOI technology, Sanjie believes that the main focus is on: mobile; Internet of Things, including NB-IoT, GPS, NFC; RF, millimeter wave applications, including 5G, LTE and WiFi; and automotive electronics, including micro-control , radar and ADAS systems. As far as the grid core 22FDX platform is concerned, it is the goal to meet the needs of the 5G era. The grid core 22FDX technology has integrated functions on the 22 GHz level, including technical systems such as ADAS radar, which are compatible with automotive applications. All of this indicates the wide application field of the grid-based FDX technology, which not only reflects the market demand for FD-SOI technology, but also promotes the optimization and upgrade of the FD-SOI technology itself.
The grid core 22FDX® provides an integrated solution for high performance, low power, low cost IoT, mainstream mobile devices, wireless communication interconnects and networks. Sanjay emphasized that the grid core 22FDX® technology has fewer masks, lower power consumption, higher density and higher performance than other similar technologies. At the same time, the 22FDX® body bias technology simplifies design, reduces time-to-market, and enables short-term peak performance applications. This provides a powerful advantage for 22FDX® technology, while reducing development costs while providing customers with superior performance solutions.
At the forum, Sanjie introduced the core-embedded embedded magnetic random access memory (eMRAM) technology based on the 22FDX® platform: the high energy efficiency of FDX® and eMRAM together with the differentiated RF and millimeter wave IP, making 22FDX a battery-driven thing. An ideal platform for networked and self-driving automotive radar system-on-chip (SoCs).
For a long time, Gexin has continuously promoted the breakthrough of FD-SOI technology, and is currently undergoing physical verification of large-scale IP. In the speech, Sanjie announced the design results of the 22FDX-based ARM Cortex-A53 and Mali-T820. The reduction in area and power consumption prove the performance of 22FDX.
In order to promote the development of FD-SOI technology from design to mass production, Gexin announced the launch of the FDXceleratorTM cooperation project in 2016. FDXcelerator is a collaborative ecosystem focused on 22FDX® technology that reduces time-to-market for customers. With the help of the grid and FDXcelerator cooperation solution, customers can quickly migrate from nodes such as 40nm and 28nm to FD-SOI technology to create an innovative 22FDX solution. As of September this year, the number of partners in the grid has increased from 7 last year to 33, showing the industry's affirmation of the grid core trend and support for FD-SOI technology.
In addition to 22FDX®, Sanjay also mentioned RF SOI technology. He believes that the former is integrated and the RF SOI is more focused on the design of front-end modules. Grid has the largest market share in the RF field, with RF SOI chip delivery reaching 32 billion units to date. In introducing the latest micro-reduction technology of the grid core RF SOI, Sanjie said: "We will not only continue to evolve from the process size, but also further develop our technology to meet the needs of our customers and adapt to different applications."
Finally, Sanjay introduced the 12FDX® technology. The 12FDX technology is built on the 12nm FD-SOI platform, which is comparable to the 10nm FinFET and has better power consumption and lower cost than the 14/16nm FinFET. The core 12 FDX semiconductor technology will enable future systems to span applications in a variety of applications including mobile computing, 5G networking, artificial intelligence, and driverless.
