This year, Liu Lianquan, a peach farmer in Houbeigong Village, Dahuashan Town, Pinggu District, Beijing City, used a smart peach sorter. This sorter combines the AI technology provided by Baidu's paddlepaddle open source platform, and is specialized by Zhou Zhongxiang, a student of automation at Beijing University of Technology. People develop and produce, according to the size, color and appearance of peaches, they can be automatically sorted and save time and labor. With this machine, the trivial sorting of peaches in previous years became easy and labor-saving.
Lao Liu’s peach garden is nearly 30 acres, with an average of 40 peach trees per acre. These peach trees vary in type and maturity. The work of sorting peaches at ordinary times is particularly troublesome. Not only do they have to get up early, but they also have to hire many workers. Picked peaches are sorted and sized, then sold to the market for sale at different prices. Each fruit weighing more than half a catty is a fruit, the price of 6-8 yuan per catty. Each weighing three or four, the market price of 3-4 yuan. The smaller ones are inferior and can only be dealt with at low prices.
Liu Lianquan introduced that manpower sorting peaches work long hours, and can only be observed by the feel and naked eye, sorting errors. In addition to weight, appearance, color, and whether or not there are scars and other indicators of the appearance of the same important, manual selection will inevitably appear "look."
In addition, as labor costs continue to increase in recent years, Lao Liu’s spending on labor is also increasing year by year. Before and after the picking period will last for three or two months. The rising labor cost is not a small expense for Lao Liu.
What pleased Lao Liu is that this summer, Zhou Zhongxiang and his three classmates noticed the problems of TaoNong. They hope that through their own efforts, they will use the machine to sort peaches more accurately. They noticed Baidu’s face recognition technology and thought that it might be possible to try “peach face recognitionâ€.
Zhou Zhongxiang and his classmates downloaded documents and codes from the Internet, established a model applicable to each grade classification of peaches, and determined the complete scheme of the machine. In the training of the model, Baidu PaddlePaddle community staff provided them with online technical guidance.
Through constant modification and debugging, Zhou Zhongxiang and others finally integrated and assembled a conveyor belt, a push-pull device, a circuit control system, and a large peach phase identification system into a smart peach sorter. In order to let the machine learn how to divide peaches, everyone “learned†the photos of 6,400 large peaches. In this process, the machine automatically extracted the features of each category and formed its own classification logic. Due to the use of artificial intelligence technology, the sorter not only achieves automatic sorting, but also continuously accumulates and learns new data in the process of work to improve its own accuracy. After several data evaluations, the machine accurately separates the peaches. The highest rate has exceeded 90%.
At present, the sorter can sort about 1200 pounds of peach per hour. Zhou Zhongxiang stated that as the technology continues to improve, the accuracy of machine sorting will be higher and higher, the speed will be faster and faster, and it is expected to achieve an hourly sorting of 1600. jin. Ordinary humans sort about 800 kilos per hour and they cannot be sorted for long periods of time. Liu Lianquan said with emotion: "With the smart sorter, we can save a lot more. Just pour in the peaches and the machines will be divided automatically."
The birth of intelligent sorters was not the first cross-border cooperation between artificial intelligence and agriculture. A few years ago, there were related attempts in foreign countries. As a large agricultural country, China’s demand for artificial intelligence and agricultural integration is even stronger and more urgent. Previously, at the Baidu AI Developer Conference, Baidu launched two open platforms to enable artificial intelligence to be applied to all walks of life including agriculture.
At present, Zhou Zhongxiang's team has already shared all the programs and source codes of the Peach Sorter. He hopes that more people will participate in the project and improve the quality of the project. Zhou Zhongxiang introduced that the application of the intelligent peach sorter can free up manpower and increase the efficiency of agricultural production. It can also continue in-depth research and development on the basis of the existing, as a model to develop an apple sorter or sweet orange sorter.
