Thierry Ligozat, Chief Innovation Officer at Teledyne e2v, delivered a compelling keynote speech at the Asia Pacific Innovation Summit 2017 series titled "Smart & Connected Cities." His presentation focused on the role of image and vision sensors, systems, and applications in shaping the future of smart cities. The event, hosted jointly by the Asia-Pacific Innovation Summit and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park, took place on September 7–8, bringing together experts to explore how technology can drive urban transformation and support the development of a smarter, more connected Hong Kong.
In his talk, Thierry highlighted how smart cities will depend heavily on advanced visual technologies to gather and interpret visual data, supporting better decision-making and creating more interconnected, intelligent, and responsive communities. He outlined five key applications: smart public lighting, intelligent transportation systems, industrial safety, traffic monitoring, and medical imaging. Each example illustrated how vision systems are becoming essential in making cities safer, more efficient, and more sustainable.
Thierry also explained the components of a modern vision system, including optical elements, sensors, electronic controls, image processing units, and optional specialized lighting. He then showcased Teledyne e2v’s cutting-edge CMOS sensor technology, which extends beyond the visible spectrum into ultraviolet (UV) and near-infrared (NIR), enabling night vision and critical medical applications. These sensors can capture wide-area images during both day and night, while still accurately reading small details like license plates. Additionally, they offer advanced 3D vision capabilities, improving depth perception, reducing false detections, and enhancing overall system reliability. This technology is set to play a pivotal role in the next generation of smart city solutions.
