Car network explosion: General Motors pushes 4G

GM has always been concerned about the convenience of the Internet access function of the car system. In North America, 4G mobile Internet services have become popular, and GM is preparing to port it to cars.

Recently, GM's subsidiary Onstar (Anjixing) launched the 4G LTE car system Internet service, allowing users to enjoy the same 4G network speed as the mobile phone in the car. Before SHIFT reported in March that Cadillac is about to ship Onstar 4G LTE data service, today OnStar began pricing the service.

OnStar will install 4G LTE in a universal in-vehicle system in June this year, which has a trial period of 3 months or 3GB traffic. GM said it will be the first to connect 4G LTE to Wi-fi and car radio in the Chevrolet 2015 Malibu. After that, 30 GM cars such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac will gradually use 4G services and will be installed at the end of 2014. Finished.

GM's latest 4G Internet charging standard is: The owner of the OnStar Safe & Sound or DirecTIons & ConnecTIons service in the United States can get 4MB of traffic per month for an additional $5. If you pay $50, you can enjoy 5GB of traffic. Car owners who do not use these services will be charged an additional $5. Customers can also purchase data in one lump sum, such as spending $5 a day to purchase 250MB of traffic.

"Our goal is to be able to connect online life into the car and then connect the car to the online life," Terry Inch, chief operating officer of GM Group OnStar, said in an interview. When connected to 4G LTE, the car itself can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot. It can connect up to seven mobile devices and also help to enhance OnStar's coverage and service.

After the 4G free trial period is over, customers can click on the OnStar button and contact the staff to sign up for the next data service. Now GM is developing a way to register the service via the Web or smartphone, which is convenient for users to customize the 4G Internet service of the car system.

GM has been looking for new profit points in the services of in-vehicle system networking. The 4G LTE initiative represents a versatile and potentially lucrative new business. The company hopes to generate additional service revenue through the car network connection, thereby enhancing its traditional core car sales and Separate OnStar system monitoring and assistance services. LTE services may add a competitive advantage to GM.
