According to CTimes, a team led by Professor Ivy Hsu from the Department of Bioscience and Technology of Chung Yuan University found that LED can replace laser treatment of cancer.
The professor announced the findings at a press conference held by the Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology on Wednesday.
Taiwan has been importing laser equipment produced in the United States, but the cost of each laser equipment is as high as NT$1.5 million (US$4.58 million). The research and development project initiated by Professor Hsu aims to demonstrate the efficacy and performance of LED lamps in photodynamic therapy results.
“The led light source is capable of achieving a power density of more than 635 nm and is compatible with laser light intensity, but it has a better therapeutic effect in preclinical studies of hamster buccal precancerous lesion models.†The report quoted Professor Ivy Hsu as saying .
These findings indicate that in the future, the Taiwan market can reduce the dependence on foreign laser sources by adopting laser substitutes. The researchers also pointed out that Taiwan is one of the world's largest LED production bases, with advanced high-brightness LED light source technology.
