Several days ago, the team leader helped the brothers fix a Siemens touch screen. After powering it on, this is what they saw.
After power-on, the screen only shows the model and version number of the touch screen. This issue can happen for two main reasons. First, the touch screen might have lost power during an HMI OS update, similar to a computer shutting down unexpectedly during an installation. Second, if the touch screen has been without power for too long or was affected by external interference, the firmware could be corrupted, making the device unresponsive—like a computer that won’t boot up. Many users have reported losing firmware on MP series touch screens, so this is a common problem.
Now, let me show you how to "Save the Brick."
Step 1: Required Hardware and Software
You’ll need a USB-PPI cable, a programming computer, and WinCC Flexible 2008 SP4 software.
Step 2: Create a Project with the Same Touch Screen Model
Open WinCC Flexible 2008 SP4, create a new project using the same touch screen model as the one that’s "bricked." Connect the USB-PPI cable and power on the touch screen.
Step 3: Set the Communication Interface
Make sure the communication settings are correctly configured in the software.
Step 4: Start the OS Update
Select the appropriate options and then turn off the touch screen. Once it's powered down, click "Update OS."
As soon as the dialog appears, power on the touch screen immediately.
Once the process completes, the touch screen should be fully functional again. This method has saved many devices from being completely non-operational. If you're facing a similar issue, don't worry—this step-by-step guide should help you restore your Siemens touch screen back to life.
