Leading 25 years later: Samsung chip revenue over Intel into new overlord

This year, Samsung has achieved remarkable profits and set multiple records. Behind this success is the continued strength of its semiconductor business, which has benefited from rising memory and SSD prices, as well as smooth operations in the foundry sector. According to reports from Japanese media, from January to September this year, Samsung’s semiconductor revenue reached 53.15 trillion won (approximately USD 49.2 billion), marking a 46% year-on-year increase. In comparison, Intel's semiconductor revenue for the same period was USD 45.7 billion, up just 6% year-over-year. With the price increases seen in the second half of the year, Samsung’s earnings have also climbed significantly. Even when factoring in exchange rate fluctuations, it's highly likely that Samsung’s semiconductor revenue for the full year will surpass that of Intel. In fact, Samsung's dominance in chip sales over Intel isn't surprising—Samsung has held the top position in the chip market for over 25 years. Meanwhile, Intel still relies heavily on PC CPU sales, a market that is now largely saturated. Although demand for memory chips is expected to keep growing, if chip manufacturers expand their production, prices could drop. On the other hand, Samsung has a more diversified approach to chip revenue. The growth in storage capacity of smart devices and the rapid expansion of the data center industry have both contributed to its strong performance. This diversification makes it logical for Samsung to maintain its leading position in the semiconductor industry.
