The growing demand for precise location-based technologies has sparked significant interest, especially with the rise of applications like drone delivery, asset tracking, medical monitoring, precision agriculture, and connected vehicles. A recent comment highlighted that in high-accuracy positioning scenarios, Ultra-Wideband (UWB) stands out as a promising solution. UWB can transmit large volumes of digital data over short distances, making it an ideal technology to prevent costly miscommunications and errors. While several indoor positioning systems using established technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS are available and sufficient for approximate location needs, achieving fine-grained accuracy requires innovative approaches. UWB, which operates in the 3–10 GHz frequency range, is now being seen as a key enabler for tracking a wide range of automated devices with high precision. As shown in the image, the demand for medical and delivery drones is on the rise, and public-grade high-precision positioning is becoming essential. UWB functions similarly to an indoor GPS, offering greater accuracy than traditional methods. This makes it a valuable tool for improving services in areas like warehouse management, healthcare, and emergency response. Although Bluetooth beacons are commonly used for setting up indoor location benchmarks, their latency often falls short of real-time and high-accuracy requirements. UWB addresses this gap by calculating distance based on the time it takes for signals to travel between devices, delivering position updates in milliseconds for real-time performance. Moreover, UWB is energy-efficient, helping extend the battery life of sensors and tags, which lowers operational costs. When implementing accurate indoor positioning with UWB, the antenna plays a crucial role. It must be compact enough to fit into PCBs or embedded within devices without compromising performance. Key parameters like group delay, polarization, and signal fidelity need to be carefully considered during design. To achieve the highest levels of real-time positioning accuracy, systems must support multiple radio frequency bands. Emerging solutions now leverage not only GPS L2 or L5 bands but also satellite systems like Galileo, Glonass, and Beidou, enabling more reliable and accurate positioning across different environments. For GNSS to deliver consistent positioning performance, two types of antenna technologies are required. The first is a stacked antenna that covers L1, L2, and L5 bands, ideal for use in vehicles and drones. The second is a four-ring expanded passive or active solution, suitable for base stations and other infrastructure. These antennas offer better radiation patterns and can track more satellites compared to traditional patch antennas. As the need for precise positioning expands beyond indoor spaces—into outdoor applications like precision agriculture, cross-industry drone operations, military uses, and networked vehicles—operators must adopt new strategies to meet these challenges. High-accuracy positioning at the rank level offers a solid foundation, and the antenna remains a critical component in achieving this goal.
