Essence integrated 371 cities in the world to collectively turn off the lights (Photos)

371 cities from more than 30 countries around the world are scheduled to start at 8 pm local time on the 29th, and will be turned off for one hour depending on the time zone. This energy conservation and environmental protection activity was initiated by the World Conservation Fund and called “Earth Time”. Aladdin Lighting Network comprehensively displays this global energy-saving event by integrating information from major media such as Xinhua News Agency and Lianhe Zaobao.

New Zealand and Fiji take the lead in entering Earth Hour

Subsequently, cities in Australia, the Philippines, Thailand, and many other countries turned off the lights in time zones to participate in the activities initiated by the World Conservation Foundation. Participants hope to promote energy conservation and greenhouse gas reductions through a one-hour blackout.

Earliest entry

The World Conservation Fund has listed on the website that hundreds of cities in 38 countries will join this year's Earth Hour, including 26 major cities such as San Francisco, Ottawa, Canada, Bangkok, and Dublin, Ireland.

At that time, these cities will close the lighting of local landmarks. Cities such as Rome, Italy, London and Seoul, South Korea, although they have not officially announced their participation, they may also suspend the lighting of some attractions and buildings.

New Zealand and Fiji were the first to enter Earth Hour.

In Christchurch, New Zealand, more than 100 stores and thousands of homes entered the dark at 8 pm local time, computers and televisions were turned off, and dinner time was pushed until 9 pm.

The Lanham Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand has turned off all the lights and lit candles.

The Suva, the capital of Fiji, in the same time zone, also turned off the lights.

Sydney is extinguished again

It is Australia that started to turn off the lights later.

At 8 pm local time, the Sydney Opera House extinguished the lights in the huge shell-like building, and the Harbour Bridge closed the lights. Although the whole city is not completely immersed in the darkness, only sporadic lights can be seen. The business district is one of the darkest places, and local event organizers say that 250 of the 350 commercial buildings in the business district are completely closed.

Most of Sydney's local businesses and residents are not idle in the dark. They have organized candlelight dinners, beach bonfires, and even green-powered film specials. This is Sydney's second participation in Earth Hour, March 31 last year. On the day, Sydney became the first major city to respond to the call of the World Conservation Foundation.

At present, it is unclear how many people in Sydney participated in this year's "Earth Hour" event, and organizers hope that this number will exceed last year. Last year, about 2.2 million residents and 2,000 businesses participated in the event, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 10.2% in one hour.

In addition to Sydney, cities such as Canberra, the capital of Australia, have also turned off their lights for an hour this year.

"Wake up the ringtone"

“The magic is that this activity transcends the political border,” said event promoter Andy Ridley. “It seems that it really resonates with everyone.”

Ridley stressed that the lights participating in the event city could not be completely extinguished, only symbolically extinguishing the lights of the landmark buildings, and the organizers most expect the merchants and individual residences to participate in the event.

“'Earth hour' is related to everyone and every organization, from individual to multinational company, everyone, facing the same problem – climate change,” Ridley said. “For me, the real success is The number of participants."

"This is a wake-up ringtone," Sydney Mayor Clover Moore said. "We need to make a real plan for our future. 'Earth hour' is something we can do together." (Xinhua News Agency / Reuters)
