Cree 60W-LED bulb evaluation

Cree's April launch of LED lights below $15, equivalent to 60W, provides excellent performance. Cree's own brand-name bulbs have entered the LED bulb replacement market. The appearance is a very important aspect of an LED bulb: for example, the appearance of the unconventional, remote yellow phosphor of the Philips L-winning bulb has been praised by someone. Cree's bulb is very similar to an incandescent bulb, but it is a bit heavier than an incandescent bulb: the Cree bulb weighs 4 ounces and the incandescent bulb weighs 1 ounce.

The standard color temperature of an LED replacement bulb is 2700K, which is warm and comfortable. The light bulb provided by Cree is 5000K in cold color temperature, and the price is slightly higher. It is probably because the bulb with low color temperature produces more effective light: the bulb of 5000K only needs 9W to generate 800 lumens, compared to 9.5W for 2700K. .

It works well when the bulb is gradually dimmed, without flickering or flashing. With two Lutron dimmers and a cheaper thyristor dimmer, the dimming was tested to be smooth at all times. After removing the silicone coated glass bulb cover, it can still be used. The following figure shows that after power-on, the entire LED voltage is 220Vdc when fully illuminated and 207Vdc when dimmed.

These LEDs are mounted in a cylindrical vertical arrangement at the center of the bulb, which is the blue LED covered with a white luminescent phosphor. A total of 20 LEDs are divided into 10 groups mounted on metal core printed circuit boards. Each individual LED component is actually a 4 LED emitter sharing a small matrix phosphor coating. That is, there are a total of 80 LEDs (4 LEDs per single LED element; a total of 20 LED elements) arranged in two parallel arrays, each with 10 individual LED elements. Someone wonders if an LED open circuit fault will affect a complete LED string, causing half of the light bulb to go out. According to Cree, this possibility is only one in a million in actual use, which is the confidence that Cree can provide a warranty for 10 years.

A metal core printed circuit board is inserted between each pair of LEDs to cause the board to be bent into a decagon. Except for the air itself, there is no heat conduction path, such as in the adhesive of the heat sink, between the metal core printed circuit board and the metal post. Thermally conductive compounds may transfer heat better, and will also result in a more complex and expensive assembly process. The following figure shows a plastic guide on a metal post that transfers the power of the drive on the PC board up to the LED column across the metal column. Do not think that these plastic guides are worse than soft soldering. In fact, the most likely point of failure of LED bulbs is because of solder joints, because these solder joints are hand soldered. Properly installed guides are more reliable than manual soldering and have the added advantage of getting components stuck in place, reducing labor costs. These bulbs are assembled in the United States.
