The Beon bulb project just landed on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter this week, an intelligent lighting solution that can also be used as a home security system. This doesn't sound like a breakthrough product, but the innovative features of the BeON bulb make it not only monitor the surrounding environment, but also deter the "invaders."
The BeON bulb has a built-in Bluetooth LE connection, a processor and a microphone, and a set of 800 lumens LED bulbs. This allows the BeON bulb to understand and remember the lighting patterns in the user's home—on time, off time, order of opening, which room is turned on at some time of the day, and so on. When the user is not at home, the BeON bulb can use this information to "copy" the user's behavior, making the outsider look like someone in the family.
It can also "listen" to the sound of the doorbell using the built-in microphone. If the system hears someone ringing the doorbell when the user is not at home, the lighting fixtures are turned on in order to create the illusion of someone in the house. The BeON bulb can even hear an alarm from a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm. If the user is not at home, it will send a message to the user's mobile phone; if the user is at home, it will turn on the lighting of the escape channel.
Beon bulbs will be available in three versions, with standard bulbs priced at $199 (about RMB 1224), $399 (about RMB 2,455), and $599 (about RMB 3,684). The price is slightly higher. BeON expects to release the first batch of products in April next year.
