Ayla Chief Legal Officer Jessica Zhou talks about the future of smart homes and the Internet of Things

OFweek smart home network news in recent years, with the Internet of Things this technological change and quickly became popular, not only includes smart manufacturing, car networking and other new vocabulary, but also includes the smart home and smart home appliances are closely related to the two hot spots. Ayla Networks (Ayla), which is well-established in this area, is becoming more and more familiar to the industry. At the same time, Ayla has never missed any high-light moments in the smart home industry. In the AWE2017 (China Household Electrical Appliances and Consumer Electronics Fair) held in Shanghai from March 9th to 11th, OFweek smart home network once again saw Ayla and its well-arranged product and program display platform, and was fortunate to obtain the chief legal officer of Ayla. Ms. Jessica Zhou's hospitality and elaborated her unique insights on smart home appliances and smart home related hot topics.

Ayla Chief Legal Officer & Vice President Jessica Zhou

Data is the core value of smart home

Ayla, headquartered in Silicon Valley, USA, entered the Chinese market as early as 2010, bringing with it frontier concepts related to the Internet of Things and cloud services. During the conversation, the author found that even after 7 years of industry ups and downs, Ayla's concept and corporate strategy have never been outdated. In particular, the understanding of the core value of smart home is still very forward-looking.

"Ayla's understanding of the core value of smart home lies in the excavation and utilization of data." Jessica believes that at present, many manufacturers are still at the initial stage of understanding smart homes, focusing solely on device interconnection and intelligent control, resulting in a large number of The companies are struggling with the homogenization of products, price wars and other markets in the Red Sea. From Ayla's point of view, "smart homes" should represent a more comprehensive and in-depth smart concept today. Similar to the key elements of the Internet of Things, the value of smart homes is not limited to the intelligence of home appliances or devices, but to them. Generated a large amount of data resources. ”

“The in-depth use of data is the high-value embodiment of smart homes and is the second phase of Ayla's recognition of IoT and smart home development,” Jessica said. “Giving the advantages of big data to manufacturers is Ayla's wisdom. An important way for home appliances and home makers to bring more added value."

Appliance manufacturers actively test water in overseas markets

After years of accumulated technology and experience, domestic home appliance manufacturers have already had many advantages in terms of production capacity and product cost. However, even if China’s home appliance market has ushered in a wave of intelligence and has acquired new development opportunities, due to fierce competition in the domestic market and other characteristics of the market itself, most home appliance manufacturers have difficulty in achieving the most critical profit margins. Big improvement. Therefore, many companies have focused their attention on overseas markets with greater potential.

For the domestic appliance manufacturers to "go global" this trend, Ayla's attitude is to encourage and support manufacturers to actively test the water, and will share professional experience throughout.

Ayla’s confidence in this comes from the fact that Ayla is positioning itself as the foundation of a “globally-disposed” cloud service platform. Not only does it have a layout in the European and American markets, Ayla is also deeply plowing in China for many years. This is actually not easy for some well-known U.S. cloud service providers, and is therefore one of the most obvious advantages of Ayla over other cloud service providers.

Ayla Presents New Achievements in Home Appliances Partners at AWE

“When it comes to helping home appliance manufacturers go to sea, Ayla can leverage its many years of global presence to help plan the successful landing of home appliance manufacturers and help them solve many unexpected problems and risks,” Jessica said.

Appliances to the sea to be careful of minefields

“It is a good thing for Chinese home appliance companies to actively go out to sea, but at the same time avoid touching some 'minefields'”. Jessica said, “Many major home appliance manufacturers such as Midea, Hisense, Haier, and TCL are all actively exploring foreign markets, and these manufacturers have also noticed the importance of big data. Companies should pay attention to the value of data development. Different countries and regions will have differences in laws and regulations concerning data security and privacy. Unknown companies may cause very serious consequences once they reach minefields."

Must pay attention to big data laws and regulations

So what key points need attention for China's home appliance manufacturers or smart home manufacturers on the road to the sea?

Before we talk about going to the sea, we can first understand the relevant domestic policy trends: China’s first cyber security law and “The People’s Republic of China Cyber Security Law” have been held by the Standing Committee of the Twelfth National People’s Congress. The fourth meeting was announced on November 7, 2016 and will be implemented on June 1, 2017. Jessica said that the regulation is China's first law that systematically restricts the security and protection of data and privacy. The introduction of this regulation reflects that the concerns of all countries and even countries in the world regarding data security have risen to a new level as a whole.

Countries around the world have different degrees of emphasis on data security. Jessica divided the four countries into four levels according to the degree of regulatory perfection:

The first level, the United States, Canada, Europe, South Korea, the data security laws and regulations of these countries and regions are very mature and perfect;

Second level, China, Japan, Eastern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, etc.;

The third level, India, Brazil, some countries in Southeast Asia, and Turkey and other countries, relevant laws and regulations are still in a stage to be mature;

The fourth level, Russia, Middle East, Mexico, South America, some countries, relevant laws and regulations are very limited. As for other countries and regions, it is basically at a stage where there is not enough awareness of data privacy and relevant laws and regulations have not yet been formed. However, it can be determined that the major countries and regions that export Chinese home appliance manufacturers are exporting are increasingly paying attention to this aspect.

For example, European countries are one of the overseas markets that home appliance manufacturers are very keen on. The protection of data privacy in Europe is also very representative and its implementation is quite strict.

According to Jessica, as early as 2012, the European Union issued the "EU Data Protection Regulations" draft, which is known as the GDPR. In April 2016, GDPR was finalized and will be implemented in May 2018. The amount of penalties involved in this regulation can be up to 4% of the total global turnover of the companies involved, or 20 million euros, whichever is the highest. This level of punishment may lead to major shortages in the capital chain and even overall operations.

It is precisely because these laws and regulations are changing rapidly and with high intensity on a global scale. Ayla's professional legal team scans and follows the relevant developments of countries around the world almost every week.

"Ayla not only has been deeply cultivating in the field of IoT cloud technology for many years, but also has accumulated professional capabilities and rich experience in legal consulting and related customer training, in order to help customers in one step, without having to start complex research from scratch. Plan the response. Ayla can help our clients do their homework on laws and regulations before going to sea,” Jessica said.

In addition to data privacy, Jessica believes that companies need to further strengthen their awareness of intellectual property protection.

Although domestic smart device manufacturers or home appliance manufacturers are already very technologically advanced, they have not truly improved the protection of property rights. “Ayla has made a relatively profound arrangement in terms of intellectual property, not only applied for a large number of U.S. patents and European patents, but also paid great attention to the patent layout in China, thus consolidating its leading position in the industry and providing better for domestic manufacturers. Cloud service platform."

"Future-oriented" Internet of things platform

Ayla's "future-oriented" IoT platform focuses on end-to-end, enterprise-class and focuses on mining the value of big data

"Ayla is a company with a more idealistic philosophy." With regard to the development purpose of "facing the future", Jessica said, "At the beginning of Ayla's founding seven years ago, 'big data' or 'Internet of Things' was in the United States at the time. All of them belonged to a very strange concept.At that time, no one could imagine that Google would acquire Nest for a price of 3.2 billion U.S. dollars four years later—a company with only two smart products; Networking can turn all electrical products into smart products, and Ayla has already seen the trend of industrial development in the next 10 years, so after 7 years, Ayla has made the cloud platform very solid and secure. , And highly scalable, and when Ayla looks at the future again, it will use the same ideas, so that the future of big data services also have the above three elements, as the industry's most eye-catching future of the Internet of things platform."
