Facebook Launches VR Social Platform Spaces at F8 Developers Conference

On April 19, at the F8 Developer Conference, Facebook announced a beta version of the VR social platform, code-named Facebook Spaces. Today users can preemptive experience through the Oculus App Store.

"VR is essentially a social platform, and we are also building people-centric platforms," said Rachel Rubin, head of social team at Facebook VR, in a keynote speech.

The Facebook Spaces platform integrates with Messenger's phone capabilities, which means that users in VR can connect with users who are not in VR. Users without VR heads-up can receive 2D versions of pictures, videos, etc. made in the VR.

VR users can also create cartoon avatars or virtual characters, as well as VR game applications.

The Spaces platform arrived three years after Facebook acquired Oculus VR and one year after Oculus Rift’s first release. Rachel Rubinb said that Facebook is only at the beginning of VR social technology.

Currently, Facebook Spaces fits Oculus Rift heads and Touch handles. Facebook users can connect to Facebook accounts through the Oculus system and use voice chat and avatar language to communicate via VR.

Users can also take selfies, draw pictures and watch 360-degree panoramic videos in VR with their friends and make calls via Messenger.

At present, the Spaces platform does not support Samsung Gear VR and other smart phone VR systems.
