The AI era is approaching: Google, Apple, etc. are madly acquiring AI startups

Since 2012, 46% of the acquired artificial intelligence companies have received support for venture capital.

Giants in the field, such as Google, IBM, Yahoo, Intel, Apple, and Salesforce, are competing to acquire privately-owned artificial intelligence companies. Ford, Samsung, General Electric and Uber have also gradually joined the field. Since 2012, about 200 private companies using artificial intelligence algorithms have been acquired in vertical industries. Only 30 companies were acquired in the first quarter of 2017 (until March 24), and the biggest one was Ford’s $1 billion acquisition of Argo AI.

In 2013, Google acquired DNNresearch, a deep learning and neural network enterprise, from the computer science department of the University of Toronto. This acquisition has greatly enhanced Google's image search capabilities. In 2014, Google also invested about 600 million US dollars to acquire the British company DeepMind Technologies (last year Google's DeepMind project just killed a Go world champion). Last year, Google acquired the visual search startup MoodStock and the robot platform Api.ai. In the first quarter of this year, Google once again acquired Kaggle, a predictive analytics platform.

After Apple's acquisition activities followed Google, the number of acquisitions reached seven, ranking second. It recently acquired RealFace, a Tel Aviv startup, for $2 million.

Intel and Facebook are tied for third (5 acquisitions). The former completed three acquisitions in 2016 - Itseez, Nervana Systems and Movidius. Facebook recently acquired Belarusian startup Masquerade Technologies and Swiss startup Zurich Eye.

And Twitter and Microsoft are tied for fifth (4 acquisitions). The former recently acquired Magic Pony, an image processing startup. The latter acquired Genee and Maluuba.

Salesforce acquired Tempo AI in 2015, which marks its official entry into the acquisition race. Last year it also conducted two important acquisitions: MetaMind (who was supported by Khosla Ventures) and the Open Source machine learning service provider, PredictionIO. GE made two acquisitions in November 2016: Artificial Intelligence Internet of Things, Bit Stew Systems and customer relationship management company Wise.io.

The following timetable lists companies that had more than two acquisitions in 2012. Note: Apple's acquisition date for Novauris and Amazon's acquisition date for Orbeus are not known, except that the approximate date of acquisition is replaced by an asterisk.
