Recently, sillicon Labs launched a silicon TV tuner designed specifically for the Chinese market. This silicon TV tuner eliminates the need for an external surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter or low-noise amplifier. Sensitivity and selectivity make it easier to receive the weakest signals and most TV channels. SilliconLabs currently works with five domestic TV manufacturers and Sichuan Changhong is one of its partners. Bai Lang, director of Changhong Device Research Institute, believes that the flat-panel TV design provided by Sil-iconLabs TV tuner is ideal, beyond the performance of the traditional CAN tuner, can bring consumers a better experience in the broadcast reception performance, while It also helped Changhong reduce the cost and complexity of TV tuner modules.

The latest generation of silicon tuners can already adopt the commonly used CMOS process, which allows silicon tuners to be integrated with demodulators, decoders, controllers, etc. that use the same COMS process to form SoC single chips, which greatly reduces the System cost. In the traditional CAN tuner and emerging silicon tuner technology, the gap between performance and cost is gradually diminishing. This transition has already begun in the pure digitalization of fixed applications and most mobile applications. The final challenge for silicon tuners today is that CAN tuners exist in large numbers in today's fixed hybrid applications, and silicon tuners must gradually be replaced.

An Shenhua, deputy chief engineer of TCL Multimedia's Global R&D Center, told reporters: “At present, TCL is gradually using silicon TV tuners. Previously, the cost advantages of CAN tuner were obvious, and with the increasing price of silicon tuners, More silicon TV tuners will be used." An Shenhua believes that with the continuous promotion of digital television, silicon tuners will certainly replace CAN TV tuners in the next three years.

The market is faced with the situation that shuffled silicon tuner market is currently coexisting with various semiconductor manufacturing processes, multiple technical architectures, multiple manufacturers, and multiple products. For different areas of application, different technical architectures have their own advantages. Therefore, the advantages and disadvantages of various circuit architectures of silicon tuners will differ due to the unique technologies of different manufacturers, and different manufacturers will have different preferences for different circuit architectures. From the current point of view, the zero-IF and mixed-variable mixing architectures have the most promising prospects. Common silicon tuner manufacturers include: Infineon, Maxim, Microtune, Ruikexin, NXP, Max-Linear, Freescale, Samsung, ST, and TI.

The small size of silicon tuners also opens up new applications such as USB TV sticks for tuners. In two years, with the popularity of silicon tuners, the cost will be almost the same as the cost of the tin tuners, and silicon tuners will dominate the world.
