MIPS Technologies and Dolby Laboratories announced that the two companies are introducing next-generation audio technologies for all home entertainment applications, including set-top boxes, HD DVD and Blu-ray DiscTM markets. MIPS Technologies is the first processor IP vendor to support Dolby® Digital Plus technology. The latest optimized codecs from Dolby Laboratories will all use the MIPS32® processor core.

Dolby Digital Plus is the next generation of home entertainment audio technology developed by Dolby for HD programming and media. It offers the same high quality as existing Dolby Digital technology, while requiring less bandwidth and maintaining compatibility with existing multi-million Dolby Digital receivers. In addition, Dolby Digital Plus has the power and flexibility to take advantage of the latest audio potential in the latest HD DVD and Blu-ray (Blu-ray) disc formats. Audiences can take advantage of this to get higher quality audio, more channels, and superior multichannel audio performance.

MIPS®-optimized Dolby Digital Plus audio codecs provide system-on-chip (SoC) designers with a faster, lower risk approach to developing the latest audio technologies. The codec is a must-have component for SoC designers designing HD DVDs, Blu-ray disc players, and set-top box applications, and MIPS plays a pivotal role in these market segments.

Page Haun, Global Director of Broadcasting Equipment at Dolby Laboratories, said: "As Dolby Digital Plus continues to mature, chip design becomes more sophisticated, and customers' SoC designers spend a lot of time executing, optimizing and Verification. We are pleased to work with MIPS Technologies to reduce design time, risk and time to market for designers using industry-standard MIPS cores."

Jack Browne, vice president of marketing for MIPS Technologies, said: "We are very pleased to continue to work with Dolby Laboratories, one of the world's leading leaders in audio technology. The application of Dolby Digital Plus in the MIPS core can help our customers win key The time-to-market advantage also provides market opportunities for home entertainment applications for both companies, and MIPS Technologies has dominated the market."

Dolby Digital Plus is optimized for all MIPS 32 processor cores and is immediately available as part of the complete MIPS Technologies Software Audio Suite (Soft Audio Suite). SoC designers authorized by Dolby can use the pre-tested MIPS optimized version of the software to replace the existing Dolby software, which has been verified by Dolby.
