Microchip Technology Inc. (US Microchip Technology Inc.) recently introduced the PIC24F "GB2" series at the Sensors Expo in Rosemont, Illinois, expanding its eXtreme ultra-low-power PIC microcontroller family. This new line is designed for battery-powered and portable applications such as IoT sensor nodes, access control systems, and smart door locks.
The PIC24F "GB2" family offers up to 128KB of flash memory and 8KB of RAM in compact 28- or 44-pin packages, making it ideal for low-power, space-constrained designs. The series includes advanced security features like a hardware encryption engine, a random number generator (RNG), and one-time programmable (OTP) memory for secure key storage. These features help protect data integrity without increasing power consumption.
With XLP technology, the PIC24F GB2 achieves an impressive 180 μA/MHz operating current and 18 nA sleep current, significantly extending battery life in portable devices. The built-in AES, DES, and 3DES encryption support reduces software overhead and improves data traffic speed. Additionally, the core-independent peripherals allow operations to run without CPU intervention, enhancing efficiency.
The GB2 series also features integrated USB and UART interfaces that support smart card applications, following the ISO7816 standard. Microchip provides a range of certified wireless modules that support Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, and Bluetooth Low Energy, offering flexible connectivity options for developers.
Joe Thomsen, Vice President of Microchip’s 16-bit microcontroller division, emphasized that in today's fast-growing IoT landscape, securing embedded data and extending battery life are no longer optional but essential. The new eXtreme ultra-low-power family combines Microchip’s embedded Wi-Fi and Bluetooth solutions, enabling low-power wireless connectivity for a wide range of IoT applications.
The PIC24F GB2 series is available in 28-pin QFN packages, suitable for medical and fitness devices like pedometers, wearable gadgets, and handheld equipment. It also supports computer peripherals, security systems, industrial monitoring tools, and IoT sensor nodes. Its versatility makes it a strong choice for designers aiming to achieve faster data transfer, lower BOM costs, enhanced security, and extended battery life.
