Microchip's ultra-low-power MCUs combine embedded data traffic with security

Microchip Technology Inc. (US Microchip Technology Inc.) recently introduced the PIC24F "GB2" series at the Sensors Expo in Rosemont, Illinois, expanding its eXtreme ultra-low-power PIC microcontroller lineup. This new family is designed to meet the growing demands of IoT applications, offering a powerful yet energy-efficient solution for battery-powered and portable devices. The PIC24F "GB2" series comes with up to 128KB of flash memory and 8KB of RAM, all packed into compact 28- or 44-pin packages. These features make them ideal for use in IoT sensor nodes, access control systems, and smart door locks. The small form factor ensures flexibility in design while maintaining high performance. One of the standout features of the GB2 series is its built-in hardware encryption engine, which supports AES, DES, and 3DES standards. This not only enhances data security but also reduces software overhead, leading to faster data processing. Additionally, the series includes a random number generator (RNG) that helps create secure keys for encryption, decryption, and authentication. A single-time programmable (OTP) memory is also integrated, acting as a secure key storage solution to prevent unauthorized access or modification. Power efficiency remains a key focus, with XLP technology delivering an impressive 180 μA/MHz operating current and just 18 nA in sleep mode. This ensures extended battery life for portable and wireless applications. The GB2 series also includes built-in USB and UART interfaces, supporting smart card applications via the ISO7816 standard. For wireless connectivity, Microchip offers a range of certified modules that support Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, and Bluetooth Low Energy, allowing developers to easily integrate wireless capabilities into their designs. Joe Thomsen, Vice President of Microchip's 16-bit microcontroller division, emphasized that in today’s fast-growing IoT landscape, protecting embedded data and maximizing battery life are no longer optional—they're essential. With the GB2 series, designers can achieve better data flow, lower BOM costs, improved security, and longer battery life in their applications.
