According to Digi-Capital, by 2022, the AR user base is expected to reach 3.5 billion. The AR industry began to take shape around 2016, and despite a decline in online chatter, investment surged in 2017, surpassing $3 billion. Digi-Capital predicts that by 2022, the AR market will not only have 3.5 billion users but also generate between $85 billion and $90 billion in revenue.

Founded in 2014, DataMesh aims to solve business challenges through data and mixed reality (MR). Its primary goal is to boost the efficiency of frontline employees, who often lack proper support systems. The company’s founder, Li Wei, previously worked at Microsoft for eight years as a project manager for Office365 SharePoint Online. He left the U.S. to return to China and start his own business, bringing with him deep insights into enterprise solutions.

Li Wei explained that while top management has access to resources, it's the frontline workers who are most in need of technological support. “There's no good automated system to help them,” he said. “We wanted to build something that could assist them directly.” This led to the question of how to deliver data effectively to these workers.

In early 2015, Microsoft released the HoloLens, a mixed reality head-mounted device that blends the virtual and real worlds. This innovation caught DataMesh’s attention, and they decided to develop their solutions based on this platform. Although Microsoft refers to it as Mixed Reality (MR), it is essentially the same as Augmented Reality (AR) in many applications.

DataMesh offers a range of MR-based solutions, including HoloHub for interactive displays, HoloDesign for home and showroom design, HoloReady for training, and DigitalAssistant for remote expert support. These tools help enterprises streamline operations and improve productivity.

Li Wei shared an example of how their technology helps businesses: “When equipment breaks down during emergency maintenance, it can cost a lot. With DataMesh, we bring experts to the front line to fix problems quickly.” The solution can be delivered via HoloLens or other devices like tablets, making it flexible and accessible.

He emphasized that while visually appealing MR content is important, the real value lies in the underlying data. “You need to integrate your ERP, knowledge management, and other systems. Just showing a video doesn’t help much. For MR to truly boost productivity, it must be part of the workflow.”

DataMesh’s clients include major companies such as Microsoft, Porsche, Huawei, and the United Nations Development Programme. For instance, Porsche uses their HoloLens application to offer customers an immersive test-drive experience. They also provide live MR demonstrations for TV shows like “I Am the Future” on Hunan Satellite TV.

Beyond end-user products, DataMesh also provides infrastructure solutions like MeshExpertDataMix, a platform for integrating data and knowledge with MR collaboration; DataMeshDirector, a 3D content creation tool; DataMeshLive!, which enables real-time MR streaming; and DataMeshCloudService, a hybrid cloud platform.

DataMesh has gained recognition from Microsoft, becoming its first official Mixed Reality partner and a member of the Microsoft Accelerator program. The company secured a round of funding from IDG Capital in March 2016, raising tens of millions of dollars.

Other players in the MR space include Jiaxun Guangyuan, Antenna Technology, Van TV, and medical tech firm Wei Zhuo. In 2018, DataMesh planned to expand into industries like automotive, aviation, entertainment, energy, construction, and BIM, while deepening its partnerships with Microsoft and other teams.

“We aim to break down barriers and upgrade our research and development using current technologies,” Li said. “This transformation will ensure we stay at the forefront of innovation.”
