After the Lantern Festival, traditional Chinese New Year decorations such as red knots, lanterns, and paper lanterns gradually disappeared from the streets of Nanchong. These symbols of celebration and good fortune were removed by operators, marking the end of the festive season. According to information obtained by the reporter from local authorities, the city started removing the main road and key area lighting on March 2, and these decorations are being sorted and recycled for future use.
On the evening of March 4, at 9 PM, the reporter visited Beihu Road in Shunqing District. With the assistance of urban management officers and traffic police, workers in reflective vests climbed ladders to carefully remove lanterns and lights from street poles and trees. They placed them next to the barriers before loading them onto trucks for transport.
During the visit, the reporter met several citizens taking photos with the lanterns. One local resident, surnamed Wang, expressed concern, saying, “These lanterns are very beautiful and created a strong sense of the New Year. But it's a shame that they will be discarded after being removed. It feels like a waste.â€
So where do these festive decorations go after the celebrations? The Shunqing District Culture, Tourism, and Radio Bureau revealed that the municipal government held a special meeting to ensure proper removal, classification, and preservation of the decorations. Local teams composed of urban management staff, traffic police, neighborhood committees, and lighting companies worked together to dismantle, handle, and store the items. All decorations were properly stored, labeled, and secured to prevent damage or theft, ensuring they could be reused in the future.
The removal process began early on March 2, with all lighting components—such as main pole fixtures, LED nets, string lights, light strips, and meteor shower lights—being recovered safely without disrupting traffic. The entire operation was carried out efficiently, with over 40 construction vehicles and more than 400 workers involved. By the morning of March 5, all New Year decorations had been fully removed, showcasing the city’s commitment to sustainability and efficient resource management.
This recycling initiative not only reduces waste but also reflects the growing awareness of environmental responsibility in modern society. As cities continue to celebrate traditions, finding ways to reuse and recycle decorations becomes increasingly important. Nanchong’s efforts serve as a model for other cities looking to balance cultural heritage with sustainable practices.
