DIY interactive intelligent robot design

1 Introduction

Disasters, whether natural or man-made, often result in significant property damage and pose serious threats to human lives. Timely access to critical information from the disaster site can enable quick response actions, significantly reducing the impact of such events. This project aims to develop an interactive intelligent robot that can be deployed in various disaster scenarios to assist in detection and rescue operations. By leveraging PIC32 microcontrollers, the system offers a flexible platform that can be adapted for other applications, including industrial automation, environmental monitoring, and smart community management.

2 Demand and Function Analysis

To build an interactive intelligent robot, remote control via wireless communication is essential. The main functions required are as follows: 1. Upon power-up or reset, the system should automatically configure both the host computer program and the microcontroller unit (MCU) to ensure smooth operation. 2. Users should be able to send commands from the PC side at any time to request real-time data from the robot, such as temperature, humidity, and panoramic images of the environment. 3. The PC interface must display this sensor data and allow users to respond accordingly based on the information received. 4. Based on the panoramic image provided by the robot, users should be able to reconstruct the scene and plan strategies, such as determining the optimal path for the robot to follow during rescue missions.

3 Related Technologies and Principles

Host Computer Programming

The host computer application was developed using Visual C++ 6.0. It utilizes API functions and MSComm controls to establish communication with the microcontroller. This allows for reliable and efficient data exchange between the PC and the robot.

Wireless Communication

The system employs the nRF24L01 module, a highly integrated wireless transceiver operating in the 2.4–2.5 GHz ISM band. It features a built-in frequency synthesizer, enhanced mode controller, power amplifier, crystal oscillator, modulator, and demodulator. The chip supports configuration through an SPI interface, allowing adjustments to output power, channel selection, and protocol settings. With low power consumption—9.0 mA in transmit mode and 12.3 mA in receive mode—it is ideal for battery-powered applications.

4 System Design and Implementation

The overall block diagram of the system is shown in Figure 1:

This design integrates hardware components such as the PIC32 microcontroller, wireless communication module, sensors, and camera, all working together to provide a robust and interactive robotic solution for disaster response and beyond.
