Focus on mobile business, Intel abandons desktop PC motherboard business

Intel Corporation (Intel) is planning to stop supplying desktop computer motherboards and is expected to gradually withdraw from this business within the next three years.

"As Intel gradually withdraws from the PC motherboard business, we will also accelerate the development of other key areas of desktop computers, including the integration of innovative solutions for the PC ecosystem, such as the development of reference designs, ultra-mini computer platforms (NUC) and other areas," the A company spokesperson issued an email statement.

After the launch of the fourth-generation Core products based on Haswell in 2013, Intel will no longer develop any new desktop motherboards under the Intel brand. However, the company said it will continue to support the warranty of products sold and specific products.

Intel has been supplying PC motherboards for more than 20 years. The company said that in the future, employees engaged in PC motherboard related work will redistribute tasks and transfer more resources to desktop and mobile computers that meet the needs of the new form factor. At the same time, the tasks of engineers will be readjusted to expand Intel ’s form factor reference design work, and new computing solutions will be jointly developed with the company ’s partners.

With the first 11-year contraction in PC business sales last year, Intel and other chip makers are racing to grab more market share in non-PC businesses. Over the years Intel has been trying to improve its position in smartphones and other mobile computing devices and embedded systems.

Intel said that the desktop PC business is still a major focus for the company, including hundreds of products and applications across many sub-fields. Intel expects that the desktop motherboard ecosystem, including ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI and other manufacturers, will support Intel ’s roadmap and global customer base.

How many Intel employees will be affected by Intel ’s decision to withdraw from the PC motherboard business? What is the expected impact on sales figures? Intel did not comment on this.
