Exotec creates a fully automated robotic warehouse system

According to research data from TracTIca, the market size of global warehousing and logistics robots will reach US$22.4 billion by 2021. The overall future development of the industry is broad. Warehousing mobile robots have a significant effect in improving the efficiency of cargo operations and reducing labor costs.

Exotec SoluTIons, a French robotic startup, recently won a B round of $17.7 million in financing, led by Iris Capital and currently involved investors 360 Capital Partners and Breega. This round of financing will be used by Exotec to build and sell 1,000 robots by 2019.
Exotec is committed to creating fully automated warehouse systems for the e-commerce and retail industries through 3D mobile robots and ancillary facilities. The entire system consists of three main modules: the storage robot Skypod, the shelves, and the site.

Skypod is the transporter of the warehousing system and can carry a weight of 30kg. In addition to being able to move on the ground, it can also climb the shelves and remove the cargo from one of the layers. Skypod transports the picked up goods to a fixed site, the staff takes the goods away, and Skypod returns to continue the handling. The goods in the shelves are stored in standard boxes with a height of 20~30cm, and the height of the shelves can reach 10 meters.

Skypod supports 1000 networking through WiFi communication. Customers can flexibly expand the number of robots and shelves based on storage size and frequency of delivery. Renaud Heitz, co-founder and CTO of Exotec, said: “We use AI and data operations to make our products very flexible, and our systems can grow with our customers. If orders increase by 15%, we can easily turn 15% of the robots. Add to an existing system."

Exotec was founded in 2015 by former GE medical robot designer Romain Moulin and former GE Healthcare software architect Renaud Heitz. Cdiscount, the second largest e-commerce site in France, is already testing the system and plans to purchase more robots and supporting facilities in the coming months.

There are many players in warehousing mobile robots. There are Kivas that have been acquired by Amazon in foreign countries. There are fast positions in the country, innovation in the road, Geek+ and so on. Exotec is characterized by its robotic three-dimensional handling function, which further replaces labor and is almost fully automated. Companies like Exotec also have CommonSense RoboTIcs. Of course, this also has problems. The robot climbs through the shelves, which determines that the shelves need to be customized and higher than the general shelf cost. In addition, because the robot directly transports the storage box, the box is required to be standardized, and the size of the product is different, and whether it has good adaptability is also a problem.
