Western Digital hard disk quarterly shipments 58 million rose 14% year-on-year

Western Digital announced its third-quarter 2011 financial report today. As of September 30, 2011, Western Digital shipped 58 million hard drives within three months, an increase of 13.7% compared to 51 million in the same period last year.

Western Digital had a revenue of $2.7 billion in the previous quarter, net profit of $239 million, and earnings per share of $1.01, compared with $2.4 billion, $197 million, and $0.84 respectively in the same period of last year, with increases of 12.5%, 21.3%, and 20.2%, respectively. Obviously, Western Digital will make more money.

The above data includes US$21 million in expenses for the acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage (HSGT) and legal services. Excluding these starts, the non-GAAP profit in the Western Digital quarter was $260 million, and the earnings per share was $1.10.

The Western Digital also captured $352 million in cash this season. It currently has cash and cash equivalents totaling $3.7 billion.
