In traditional computing, from personal computers to ATMs and smartphones, all data is represented in binary form—either 0 or 1, on or off. Quantum computing, however, allows qubits to exist in multiple states at once, such as 0, 1, or both simultaneously. This fundamental difference enables quantum computers to perform complex calculations at an unprecedented speed. For instance, they can debug millions of lines of code in seconds, leading to more reliable aircraft, automobiles, and medical devices like MRI scanners.
Real-world applications
Scientists are exploring how quantum computers can analyze microorganisms to develop new vaccines and optimize them to minimize side effects. Some experts believe these machines could revolutionize healthcare by enabling breakthroughs in prevention and treatment. Dr. Donald Parsons from the New York State Department of Health Research emphasized, “Without quantum computers, advancements in DNA sequencing, protein folding analysis, and drug discovery through docking algorithms would be significantly hindered.â€
Volkswagen is working on a quantum computing platform designed to predict traffic congestion up to 45 minutes in advance. Traditional computers lack the power to process such vast and dynamic data in real time. Imagine the impact: governments could identify which roads need improvement, boosting efficiency and tax revenue. Reducing traffic also helps lower air pollution, potentially reducing asthma cases and mitigating climate change effects.
Quantum computing is also set to integrate with other cutting-edge technologies, like the Internet of Things (IoT). Volkswagen’s research, for example, uses IoT sensors in thousands of Beijing taxis to track location data, which is then analyzed by quantum systems to understand city traffic patterns. This combination could lead to smarter urban solutions, such as optimizing public charging stations for electric vehicles based on user behavior.
Moreover, quantum computing can improve predictive models for future demand. In a smart city context, traffic lights and blackouts involve many variables. With better forecasting, utility companies could plan infrastructure upgrades more effectively, especially as more people adopt electric vehicles. Predicting where electric cars will be charged at night could guide investment in grid development and energy distribution.
Shaping the future
Quantum computing has the potential to reshape the world. According to McKinsey, two years ago, there were around 7,000 researchers globally, with a combined budget of about $1.5 billion. Advances in materials science and increased investment are bringing quantum computing closer to reality. Experts suggest that major changes may occur within three to five years rather than a decade.
The IEEE P7130 standard, focused on defining quantum computing concepts, is helping accelerate progress by establishing consistent terminology, such as quantum tunneling, superposition, and entanglement. Hidetoshi Nishimori, a professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology and member of the IEEE P7130 Working Group, noted, “There’s ambiguity in what quantum computing really means due to different models. Clear definitions are urgently needed.â€
The absence of a universal definition for terms like “qubit†isn’t just a technical issue—it affects how the field develops. Establishing a shared vocabulary takes time and resources, but it ensures that quantum technology can be used more effectively. A common framework will allow the world to move forward with greater clarity and innovation.
