Qin Long introduced that the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television attaches great importance to the development of standards for converged terminals, and related work has already started in 2013. The converged terminal is the most core entrance point for cable TV users. Whether it is digital television, Internet TV, multi-screen services that each radio and television operator is doing, or even future digital home services, it is necessary to connect to users through this core portal. .

The convergence terminal of the broadcast network and the Internet currently has a TV stick, an OTT box, and a smart TV integrated machine. Different terminals have different standards and the compatibility between them is relatively poor, resulting in confusion in the development of the industry. Qin Long said that taking into account the freedom of the user to select the terminal, the standard of the smart fusion terminal is the overall architecture, not to cover all the forms within a standard. “In the continuous development of the broadcasting and TV industry, follow-up will follow this framework to derive a number of standards, including standards for home networks, standards for converged set-top boxes, and standards for converged ones.”
Qin Long believes that the converged terminal is of great significance to the transformation of broadcasters and operators. It is not only an entry point for users of broadcasters and operators, but also acts as a smart home gateway. Remote education and telemedicine of future families can be completed through this terminal.
The radio network and Internet convergence terminal standard solicitation draft has been issued to all units in the radio and television system in mid-November 2014. In mid-December, comments and solicitations were completed. "According to the normal procedure, it may be issued at the end of this month or early next month," said Qin Long.

Two companies or take the lead

According to Qin Long, during the development of the converged terminal standard, two listed companies, Digital Video and Tongzhou Electronics, participated in the system and developed a system for convergent terminals.

Wu Chunyong, editor-in-chief of the triple play researcher and the chief editor of FusionNet, told the China Securities News reporter that once the convergent terminal is truly grounded and accepted by ordinary cable digital TV users, it will surely open up the traditional cable TV, Internet, IT, consumer electronics, content and other industrial chains. At each stage, by then, a brand-new industry and ecological chain will be formed around hundreds of millions of digital cable TV users. For the two companies mentioned above, in the process of forming this new industry chain, they can regain new business and profit growth points through technical upgrades to the broadcast and television systems.

Other companies in the Internet television industry chain are also expected to benefit indirectly. Wu Chunyong said that the convergence terminal will open up the gap between the broadcasting network and the Internet, and Internet TV companies can rightly cut into the traditional cable digital TV market.
