Unprecedented Universal will travel to New York to test self-driving cars

New York has long maintained a more cautious approach toward self-driving technology, which is why many tech companies have avoided conducting tests in the state. However, General Motors (GM) has now broken through this barrier, becoming the first company to officially launch autonomous vehicle testing on public roads in New York City. The project is led by GM's subsidiary, Cruise Automation, which will test its Chevrolet Bolt vehicles in the heart of the city. This marks a significant milestone, as it’s the first time Level 4 autonomous vehicles—capable of operating without human intervention in specific conditions—will be tested on public streets in New York. According to the new regulations, GM was allowed to begin testing from April 1, 2018. Each vehicle must also include a safety driver who can take control if needed. This step reflects the state’s growing interest in embracing autonomous technology while ensuring public safety. In addition to GM, other companies are also entering the scene. Recently, the office of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that Cruise Automation had been approved to conduct tests within a 5-square-mile area in Lower Manhattan. The governor acknowledged the potential of self-driving cars to reduce traffic congestion and save lives, expressing pride in working with industry leaders like GM to shape the future of mobility. As part of the initiative, Cruise plans to invite passengers to experience the self-driving technology firsthand. The company is also setting up an office in New York City to hire a dedicated team of engineers and support local innovation. This move signals a broader shift in how New York is approaching the development of autonomous transportation, balancing progress with responsibility.
