What is CIP Safety?
CIP Safety is a family of highly integrated security services that leverages the underlying communications stack of the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) network to transport secure data from the data source to its destination. CIP Safety is network independent and the original version is for DeviceNet. EtherNet/IP is now being expanded to deliver higher data throughput, longer range and greater flexibility.
CIP Safety provides point-to-point secure communication over EtherNet/IP and ControlNet and direct control of Guard I/O safety I/O modules on EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet networks.
Safety of CIP Safety
The CIP Safety protocol can be transmitted independently of the physical layer, and the implementation of approved protection measures brings the integrity required for secure applications. For example, each piece of security information is stamped with a time stamp to determine the time of the data.
The main function of the protocol is to detect possible communication errors and to take appropriate action on the security products on the network. Information errors include corruption, delay, insertion, loss, and duplication. All of these can be detected by the CIP Safety protocol. In addition to information transmission errors, the hardware design of the security system also gives each security message a high priority. The processing of priority information helps to reduce system response time and increase system uptime.
