At the Shanghai Electronics Show in Munich, Bosch Sensortec introduced a high-performance 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) BMI085. The BMI085 integrates a 3-axis 16-bit MEMS accelerometer and a 3-axis 16-bit MEMS gyroscope in a compact package.
This powerful IMU is ideal for demanding virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications as well as other applications such as navigation, body/human motion tracking and high-end gaming. The compact MEMS sensor package combines features such as extremely low drift gyroscopes and low noise accelerometers to significantly reduce unpleasant motion sickness. Its ultra-precise transient detection of head motion shortens the time delay to an almost imperceptible minimum. As a result, electronics manufacturers are able to create more realistic and immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences, enabling headset users to integrate into virtual environments for longer periods of time without having to rest frequently.
“High-performance augmented reality/virtual reality applications require motion sensors that are extremely sensitive, accurate, robust and responsive,†said Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO of Bosch Sensortec. “With Bosch BMI085, users can be excited about virtual and augmented reality. Enjoy a more realistic and enjoyable experience in the world without negative physical reactions."
Achieve virtual and augmented reality accuracy and low time delay
The extremely low latency of the new BMI085 enables headset manufacturers to eliminate image drift and provide a realistic real-world experience. The IMU offers low motion to photon delays of less than 3 ms and is capable of near perfect stability in high temperature fluctuations often encountered in continuous head mounted displays (HMD) or augmented reality headset scenarios. This system further enhances accuracy and is critical for today's lightning-fast HD augmented reality/virtual reality applications.
Excellent temperature stability
The sensor's accelerometers are rock-solid temperature-stabilized and offer impressive low temperature coefficient compensation (TCO), typically less than 0.2 mg/K and a temperature coefficient sensitivity (TCS) of 0.002%/K. The gyroscope's bias instability is typically less than 2°/h.
The BMI085's gyroscope features a powerful closed loop analog-to-digital conversion mechanism that ensures low drift characteristics even in high temperature environments. The accelerometer achieves a noise density of less than 120μg/√Hz, and the accuracy of the IMU is further enhanced by the data synchronization of the accelerometer and the gyroscope.
The BMI085 is available in a 3.0 x 4.5 x 0.95 mm3 compact package and is pin-compatible with the Bosch BMI055 IMU, making the migration to the new BMI085 extremely smooth and easy.
Bosch has more than 20 years of experience in inertial MEMS sensors and accelerometers, bringing automotive-grade reliability and performance to the field of consumer electronics sensors. BMI085 is another example of a brand's strict focus on quality and reliability.
Launch time:
BMI085 will be available to distributors in May 2018.
