TI TIDA-01168 Two-Way Automotive 12V (48V) Power System Reference Design

TI's TIDA-01168 is a four-phase, bi-directional automotive power system reference design that supports 12V and 48V voltage levels. It features two LM5170-Q1 current controllers and a TMS320F28027F microcontroller (MCU) to manage the power stage. The design supports an input range of 6V to 18V for 12V systems and 24V to 54V for 48V systems. It includes reverse polarity, overcurrent, overvoltage, and overtemperature protection, along with multiphase upgradeability. The system delivers up to 2kW of output power with an efficiency of 97%, making it ideal for 12V/48V automotive power distribution, supercapacitor, or battery backup power conversion. This article explores the key features of the LM5170-Q1, including its block diagram, application circuit for a 60A dual-phase 48V/12V bidirectional converter, and the main characteristics and system specifications of the TIDA-01168 reference design. It also covers the circuit diagram, bill of materials, and PCB layout. The LM5170-Q1 controller provides high-precision components for dual-channel bidirectional conversion in 48V and 12V automotive battery systems. It regulates the average current between the high-voltage and low-voltage ports based on the DIR input signal. The current regulation level can be set using either analog or digital PWM inputs. Dual differential current sense amplifiers and dedicated channel current monitors ensure a typical current accuracy of 1%. Robust 5A half-bridge gate drivers can drive parallel MOSFETs, delivering 500W or more per channel. The synchronous rectifier’s diode emulation mode prevents negative current flow and improves efficiency under light load conditions. The device includes multi-function protection such as cycle-by-cycle current limiting, overvoltage protection on both high and low voltage ports, MOSFET fault detection, and overtemperature protection. An innovative average current mode control scheme ensures constant closed-loop gain, allowing a single R-C network to compensate for both buck and boost operations. The oscillator can be adjusted up to 500kHz for synchronization with an external clock. Multiphase parallel operation is achieved by connecting two LM5170-Q1 controllers in three or four phases, or by synchronizing multiple controllers with phase-shifted clocks for higher phase counts. A low-state UVLO pin disables the LM5170-Q1 during low-voltage shutdown. Key Features of LM5170-Q1: - Complies with AEC-Q100 automotive standards - Operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C - ESD ratings: HBM 2 and CDM C4B - Maximum rating of 100V for high-voltage ports and 65V for low-voltage ports - 1% accurate bidirectional current regulation - 1% accurate channel current monitoring - 5A peak half-bridge gate driver - Programmable dead time control - Adjustable oscillator frequency with optional external clock sync - Independent channel enable control - Analog and digital current control inputs - Programmable cycle-by-cycle peak current limit - Overvoltage protection for high and low voltage ports - Diode emulation to prevent negative current - Programmable soft start timer - MOSFET fault detection and circuit breaker control - Flexible phase count adjustment LM5170-Q1 Applications: - Dual battery systems in automobiles - Supercapacitor or battery backup power converters - Stacked buck or boost converters ![TI TIDA-01168 Two-Way Automotive 12V (48V) Power System Reference Design](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/05/0P/1H/10_0.png) **Figure 1. It uses two LM5170-Q1 current controllers and one TMS320F28027F MCU for power stage control. The LM5170-Q1 system employs average current feedback, while the C2000™ MCU provides voltage feedback. This control method eliminates the need for phase current balancing in multiphase converters. The LM5170-Q1 system allows for high integration, reducing PCB space and simplifying design, which accelerates development. ![TI TIDA-01168 Two-Way Automotive 12V (48V) Power System Reference Design](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/05/11/02/4F2_0.jpg)
